Deep -3C chill before wintry showers next week amid hopes for ‘White Christmas’

The chances of the UK's first widespread White Christmas since 2010 have increased dramatically as long-range weather forecasts predict snow falling.

Some of the white stuff may even fall next week, as November takes an icy turn in the middle of the month.

The bitter cold will begin to appear this weekend, with reports of -3C for Bonfire Night.

Met Office meteorologists have said that "wintry showers" are likely next week in the north and northwest, and that there is "a continuing risk" that snow will fall in lower regions too.

Temperatures are set to be "colder than average" in December as the UK contends with the impact of La Nina, a climate pattern where cooler sea temperatures cause the mercury to take a dive inland.

The Met Office long-race forecast says strong winds will batter the country before light rain sweeps across the UK.

Between November 9 and November 18 wintry showers may cause havoc on higher ground, before mercury plummets later on in the week.

Towards the end of the month, the stormy and windy conditions will subside and temperatures will take a deep plunge, feeling colder than average, according to the weather agency.

Increased frost and fog are also likely and look set to make December feel more wintry than ever.

Consequently, the odds of a White Christmas are tumbling for several regions up and down the country.

With the festive season soon approaching, bookmakers are revealing odds on where in the UK could see a Hollywood-style Christmas morning.

Darren Hughes, a spokesperson for Gambling.com, said: "Winter has firmly gripped the UK and Ireland in recent weeks, and with temperatures dropping by the day, speculation has arisen as to where we might see snowfall on Christmas Day in this part of the world.

"Unsurprisingly, bookmaker odds suggest that the north is by far the likeliest location for a snowball fight this Christmas, with Aberdeen at 7/4 and Glasgow and Edinburgh at 2/1 heading the White Christmas market as of now.

"Newcastle is also high on the list at 5/2, suggesting a 29% chance of snowfall this Christmas."

Although Christmas snow looks most likely in Scotland, there is still a sizeable chance that other places will see flurries on the 25th.

Northern regions in England such as Leeds, Manchester, and Liverpool have a 20% chance, and betting there is currently at 4/1.

Gambling.com put Birmingham and Plymouth slightly behind with an 18% White Christmas probability, just ahead of London at 17%.

The odds for the capital currently sit at 5/1, and Dublin and Cardiff are currently 6/1 in the betting.
