Princess Diana craved a 'time machine' after spending months apart from her children, it's been claimed.

She was 'worried' about her two sons, Prince Harry and William, and had concerns if she was a 'good mother', a journalist has said.

Petronella Wyatt remembers meeting the Princess of Wales at a dinner two years before the late royal's death in 1997.

Petronella says she spoke about spending months apart from Harry and William and if it would have an effect on them.

But Diana confessed she would spoil her boys rotten when they did reunite again after months spent away from each other.

Petronella told The Sun: "We sipped more wine, and she looked over the rim of her glass with those famous eyes of hers.

“'I worry about my sons. Am I a good mother? I don’t see them for months and then I spoil them rotten,' she sighed. 'Sometimes I’d like a time machine.'

Petronella first met Harry and William's late mum following the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles, the future King, who she divorced in 1996.

She remembers her first impressions of Diana, saying that she attended a small dinner in the summer of 1995 where the Princess "slipped in quietly, with no fuss".

She added: "She held the room with something no mere celebrity can bottle. There was nothing gaudy about this magic she generated, nor was it an illusion of superficial beauty."

When asked what she thinks the princess would have been like at age 60, Petronella responded there were "two paths" open in front of Diana, and could have taken either of them.

Petronella said: "She could have gone on with the glitzy gaudiness and the approximations of romance, or tried to change her life and her fame. Growing old would have been hard."

It comes after a royal expert claimed Diana would be "totally heartbroken" at the feud between the brothers.

Angela Levin believes their relationship is tinged by a lack of trust.

The royal siblings, who reunited while chatting after Prince Philip's funeral in April, are reportedly on 'different paths'.

Harry confessed they had 'space' between them while speaking to Oprah in his explosive interview earlier this year.

Harry and William will reunite on the grounds of Kensington Palace for the unveiling of a statue in tribute to Princess Diana on July 1.
