Canada has been accused of “government-sanctioned euthanasia” of pets after the capital city Ottawa threatened to seize and potentially euthanise animals kept by protesting truckers. The “disgusting and callous” threat comes amid the blockade of trucks and demonstrators that have occupied Ottawa for more than three weeks. Fox News hosts reacted to the shameful claims of going after animals.

Earlier in the week, Ottawa by-law tweeted: “Attention animal owners at demonstration

“If you are unable to care for your animal as a result of enforcement actions, your animal will placed into protective care for 8 days, at your cost.

“After 8 days, if arrangements are not made, your animal will be considered relinquished.”

This sparked a wave of outrage, with Fox News’ Emily Compagno saying “It is government-sanctioned euthanasia.”

She continued: “This disgusting, callous and frankly evil policy was put on on Twitter, with the image of a little puppy.

“It’s a truly nauseating display and conveys the heartless disregard for their community and civilians.”

Fox News guest Julie Banderas added: “I can’t get over the pets. That they are actually threatening owners of animals.”

Former White House spokeswoman under Donald Trump, Kayleigh McEnany, reacted: “It is incredible that the autocracy is spreading to the animals.”

Several politicians also responded to the claims, with the President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele tweeting: “Why is the ‘international community’ not condemning this violation of human and animal rights?

Canada protests: Police surround demonstrators in Ottawa

“What would happen if a Latin American government does this to its political opposition?”

US House Republican Jeremy Faison tweeted: “A government that will kill your dog for simply disobeying their orders on a public demonstration, will eventually have no issue killing you for the same. Trudeau is a fool and a tyrant.”

On Saturday, Ottawa police declared the “occupation is over” as they continued to try to break up the blockade and disperse protesters.

This follows similar efforts on Friday when police arrested more than 100 people and towed away dozens of trucks.
