A ‘blind drunk’ woman smashed a glass into her friend’s face after downing shots, cider and gin during an all-day New Year’s Day drinking session.
Ella Shears, 20, left her ‘best friend’ Masie Phillips with scars to her face following the drunken attack in a club in Bridgend after being out drinking for 10 hours.
Shears was the ‘drunkest she had ever been’ after downing drinks with her friends to see in the New Year, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
She was ordered to pay £3,000 in compensation to her friend but avoided jail after admitting she remembered nothing of the attack.
Ella Shears, 20, (pictured) was ordered to pay £3,000 in compensation to her ‘best friend’ Maisie Phillips avoiding jail time. She will also have to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and has a curfew between 7pm and 7am for six months
Miss Phillips, 21, (pictured) said she was nervous about going outside of her house as she was worried what people might say due to her facial injuries and visible scarring. When she does leave she wears a hood and her hair down to hide her face, Cardiff Crown Court heard
Prosecutor Gareth James said Shears attacked 21-year-old Miss Phillips inside the Vetz Snooker Club in Pontycymer and going back to get it.
They had gone back to the club to pick up Shears’ coat that she had left inside. Shears became upset after Miss Phillips suggested they wait outside the club’s corridor.
Shears told Miss Phillips to ‘f*** off’ when she tried to follow her, Mr James said.
The court heard Miss Phillips then tried to grab Shears but when she did, so she was pushed forcibly up against a wall.

Miss Phillips pushed back but Shears retaliated by swinging the glass at her and smashing it into her face leaving her bleeding.
Shears was arrested days later and said she ‘felt like s***’ over the attack – and described Miss Phillips as ‘one of her best friends’.
She told the police she could not remember what had happened because she was so drunk.
Shears, of Nantymoel, Bridgend, admitted wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Shears (pictured) was ‘affectively blind drunk’ at the time of the attack Judge David Wynn Morgan told the court. Along with the compensation fee, Shears was handed a handed a 19 month suspended sentence
Miss Phillips (pictured) said that she had ‘nightmares’ for several months after the attack. She said she does not like ‘to go outside alone or to unfamiliar places’ due to her injuries
In a victim impact statement, Miss Phillips said: ‘As soon as the incident happened, I was nervous about going outside and didn’t want to leave the house.
Shears (pictured) was also handed a six month curfew between 7pm and 7am
‘I was self conscious about what people may say, I thought my feelings may improve but I still have feelings I don’t want to go outside alone or to unfamiliar places due to my facial injuries and visible scarring.
‘Ella knows where I live, I couldn’t face Ella coming near me or my house, I have nightmares of events several months after the incident.
‘We have many mutual friends, and I didn’t want to bump into people who would ask me about what happened.’
In an attempt not to be recognised, Miss Phillips started wearing her hair down and put a hood over her head to hide her face.
She added: ‘I am petrified to see Ella in person, I don’t think she’ll attack me but it’s the thought of being face to face with her after what she has done.’
Adam Sharp, mitigating, said Shears was ‘disgusted with herself’ over what had happened.
He said: ‘The defendant for reasons she can’t comprehend, with a glass in her hand has put her arm outwards in a single impact with devastating consequences’.
