Elon Musk blasted for 9-minute private jet flight – but not everyone is outraged

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has been slammed for a less-than-planet-friendly plane trip from San Francisco to San Jose, California.

The Tesla founder – and on-again-off-again buyer of Twitter – took a short nine-minute journey via his private jet

Some on social media were quick to point out that he could have gone via train, which was only five stops.

Musk's journey sparked outrage on Twitter by being branded one of the "Bad Boys Billionaires".

One user wrote: “But women should have more children to conserve the human race, meanwhile Bad Boys Billionaires can continue making Earth uninhabitable.”

Another posted: “Low carbon footprint is for the poor and the dupes.

“Getting gigarich selling the idea of a low carbon footprint to the gullible while spewing gas around the planet from your private jet, now that’s slay.”

And a third tweeted: “The rich are not like us. They do not care about us.

They are killing our planet and it's our responsibility to stop them.”

However, some pointed out that it might not be as simple as it appears.

New York Times columnist Andrew Sorkin tweeted: “The plane was likely just being “repositioned” — as in the plane was sitting at one airport and then was moved to a different airport to pick up its passengers.

"This happens all the time. Planes often sit at a less busy airport and then fly to another one close by.”

Musk has often positioned himself as a “champion on climate change”, and was even given a £400 million loan by former United States President Barack Obama to support Tesla's development.

In total, he has been given around £4 billion for his Tesla, SpaceX and Solar City companies – all of which are aimed at making planet-friendly tech or, in the case of SpaceX, making discoveries outside of our planet to aide with the battle against climate change.
