Vox came out third in the regional election on Sunday, obtaining 17.6% of the vote, while the right-wing People’s Party (PP) was first with 31.4%, ahead of the Socialist Party (PSOE) of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, with 30%. According to the official results, the far-right party increased its votes by 136.892 compared to the previous election of 2019 and managed to acquire 13 out of the 81 seats, while until now it only held one seat in the region (5,5%).
PSOE obtained 28 seats – therefore, with the 31 remaining seats of the region, the PP cannot form a government alone and will have to form a coalition.
During a press conference, Vox’s candidate for the regional elections, Juan García-Gallardo said: “What the election result tells us is that we have the right and the duty to be part of the next government of Castille and León”.
He added: “We are celebrating another electoral success for Vox.
“We are going to use the votes of these hundreds of thousands of voters to change the course of politics in Castille and León.
“If anyone wanted the PP to govern alone or for us to give away votes to the PP, they should have voted for the PP, but we made a public commitment as a party, and I did so in my last campaign event, and I am not going to give away votes to anyone”.
The current president of Castille and León and leader of the PP, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, said he wanted “dialogue with everyone”.

The far-right wing party entered the regional government of Andalusia at the end of 2018.
Subsequently, it became the third political force in the Spanish parliament in 2019.

Castille and León, with a population of almost 2.4 million, is a very rural region and has been a PP stronghold for 35 years.
On his side, Felipe Sicilia, spokesman for the PSOE, blamed the PP for strengthening the extreme right.
According to El Pais, he said: “Today the PP depends on the far right of Vox to be able to govern in Castille and León.

“They didn’t achieve the goal of strengthening Pablo Casado’s leadership, and today it is weaker than yesterday. The failure of the PP and Casado is obvious.”
He added: “The Socialist Party will continue to work, from a serious and responsible opposition, as we have done so far.
“Above all, we will work to protect the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Castille and León because we have no doubt that the PP will be willing to sacrifice them for the sole purpose of being able to obtain the government that Vox has already asked to enter.”
And he concluded: “That is why we socialists are now more necessary than ever”.
