Fury as boss asks female staff to take baths and use ‘feminine deodorant’

A boss has sparked fury by asking female staff at the company to take baths and use "feminine deodorant".

An anonymous worker took to Reddit to share a message that was reportedly sent only to female employees at their workplace, citing lifestyle choices to keep themselves smelling fresh.

The first point encouraged workers to dry their clothes quickly and not leave them in the washing machine overnight as that will cause them to "smell soured".

The second point referred to keeping hair washed and brushed and preventing it from looking oily, while the third point reminded staff to brush their teeth regularly and use breath mints.

The most controversial point was saved until last when the boss urged the workers to "use feminine deodorant as needed".

Rubbing salt in the wound, the request added: "Especially during those times of the month. When you can smell yourself, others have been able to smell you for 2-3 days. Wow!"

The boss rounded off the email by writing: "Remember – you are a walking billboard for (company name). What are you advertising?"

Reddit users were quick to criticise the message, with one writing: “A boss lecturing staff on periods is so weird. I’d resign from that sexist hellhole if I worked there", while a second added: “It's a cowards way of dealing with a sensitive issue."

A third commented: "As stupid of an idea this is for health reasons, making demands specifically on women about their periods is sexist, ignorant, inappropriate, cringey and just plain rude.

“We’re all humans, and for the most part we try not to stink but sometimes we accidentally might. It’s not the end of the world.

“Asking someone to shower if they smell really bad is one thing, but with all those specifics this is really more of a demand that employees comply with their bosses stupid sexist expectations. Ugh, so awful.”

Some Redditors however tried to justify the boss' actions, with one writing: "If this was sent en-masse, it's because there are complaints against one individual."

A second said: “That would be my guess. I have had to have the hygiene conversation with a female employee in my working life. It was uncomfortable and awkward."
