During the weekend the UK and the European Union (EU) bolstered its sanctions against Moscow, closing airspace to Russian planes.
All such aircraft, including the private jets of oligarchs, will now be unable to land in, take off from or fly over any EU nation or the UK.
When Russia invaded its ex-Soviet neighbour last week the development was met with sharp rebuttal globally.
Western allies have so far agreed to remove selected Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial messaging system.
Meanwhile, sanctions imposed by the UK Government include an asset freeze of all major Russian banks, limits to how much Russians can deposit in UK banks, and “stringent export controls” for technology sold to Moscow.
But as Vladimir Putin this weekend ordered Russia’s military to put its nuclear forces on “special alert”, do these penalties go far enough to prevent an all-out war?
