An 11-year-old girl in the US has been hailed a hero after she saved the life of a puppy after a fire broke out at a neighbour’s house.
Mackenzie Jenkins, from Cape Coral, Florida, acted quickly when she heard the barks of the neighbours six-year-old puppy before seeing smoke coming from the house on Saturday evening.
Young Mackensie had been sitting on a swing during the Labor day weekend when she noticed the blaze and dialled 911 herself to alert emergency services.
As confirmed to Fox News by Cape Coral Fire Department’s public affairs specialist, Andrea Schuch, Mackenzie called the dispatchers to the Florida home at around 6:45pm.
Thanks to Mackenzie’s description of the dog, firefighters were able to locate the puppy, who is called Fiona. The puppy was found unresponsive but firefighters acted fast with oxygen and Fiona was soon back on her feet.
In an email to Fox News, Schuch said: "The dog is, fortunately, doing great.
"She was originally unresponsive when firefighters found her, but EMS cooled her and gave her oxygen and she woke up and was walking around before the fire was even out."
Schuch added: "That just shows how important Mackenzie’s call was… if she had waited or hadn’t called, Fiona, the dog, wouldn’t have made it (and there would have been more damage to the house)."
Firefighters presented Mackenzie with a Community Recognition Coin, a reward to acknowledge local residents who go above and beyond, for helping save Fiona’s life.
The Cape Coral Fire Department posted about the incident and Mackenzie’s heroics on their Facebook page.
In the post, they wrote: "Happy Labor Day from the Cape Coral Fire Department. The end of the 'dog days of summer' had a different interpretation for Cape Coral Firefighters this weekend.
"Engine 8 responded to a public service call for a puppy whose head got stuck between two bars under a couch. Fortunately, they were able to free the pup quickly and with no injuries, much to the relief of his family!

"Then Engines 2 and 3, Ladder 1, Truck 4, Rescues 3 and 4, and Battalions 1 and 2 responded to a residential structure fire and, thanks to the quick actions of 11-year-old Mackenzie Jenkins, were able to save a 6-month-old puppy named Fiona.
"Mackenzie had gone outside to swing when she heard the neighbor’s dog barking and saw smoke coming from the house. She quickly called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers what she saw. When firefighters were able to make entry, they knew to search for a dog thanks to the information provided by Mackenzie.
"Fiona was unresponsive when firefighters found her, but Lee County EMS cooled her and provided oxygen, and by the time the fire was out, she was up and walking around!
"Firefighters presented Mackenzie with a Community Recognition Coin for her actions which not only prevented further damage to her neighbor’s home from the fire but saved their dog’s life. Great job, Mackenzie!!"
