Jeff Bezos backs firm ‘dedicated to reversing ageing process’ for eternal life

Jeff Bezos has pumped money into a firm dedicated to reversing the ageing process.

The mega-rich Amazon founder has chipped in alongside biotech mogul Evan Zimmermann to find a scientific 'fountain of youth'.

Together with numerous other investors, the pair have boosted start-up Altos Labs with a cool £230m to fund research around the world.

American businessman Zimmermann has backed the ambitious project following a smart early investment in coronavirus vaccine developers, Moderna.

Altos Labs has set out the long-term goal of seeing how the body can be "rejuvenated" through science and since securing the cash, has been busy recruiting.

Top scientists have been hired to head up its laboratories across the planet where they will focus on creating ways of keeping the body and all of its organs healthy.

Manuel Serrano is from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, in Barcelona, Spain and plans to join an Altos Labs facility in the UK.

He said: “The philosophy of Altos Labs is to do curiosity-driven research. This is what I know how to do and love to do.

“In this case, through a private company, we have the freedom to be bold and explore.

“The aim is to understand rejuvenation.

“I would say the idea of having revenue in the future is there, but it’s not the immediate goal.”

David Sinclair, a researcher at Harvard University who last December reported restoring sight to mice using the technique, said: “There are hundreds of millions of dollars being raised by investors to invest in reprogramming, specifically aimed at rejuvenating parts or all of the human body.

“What else can you do that can reverse the age of the body?” he says.

“In my lab we are ticking off the major organs and tissues, for instance skin, muscle and brain – to see which we can rejuvenate.”
