Leaving the EU means leaving the customs union too – that's what the public voted for, even if Labour doesn't like it

Rat's enough

LEAVING the EU but staying in a customs union isn’t leaving the EU at all.

So the veteran Labour MP Frank Field is right to say his Party is “ratting” on the referendum result by pushing just that plan.

A customs union wouldn’t only saddle us with the same red tape we’ve got today, but force us to ask permission from Brussels when we want to give new industries room to grow.

And it’d leave us unable to strike free trade deals with the rest of the world. That global market is the Brexit prize.

It’s clear Labour bigwigs don’t have confidence in a free trading Britain, nor do they respect the 17.4million people who wanted out of the Brussels racket.

To hear Keir Starmer talk, you’d think the referendum had finished on a score draw and there’s a chance to rewrite what the question was. Some Tory rebels sound much the same.

Enough. The PM should stare them down and stick to her commitment to a full-fat Brexit.

That’s what the public voted for, even if the Opposition don’t like it.

Knocked for Six

THE end of the standard variable tariff rip-off is good news for millions of Brits.

The Prime Minister should be applauded for forcing the Big Six to stop turning over some of their most loyal customers. We hope the cap will come into place before next winter, as the PM promises. But it’s only the start of a much-needed energy revolution that takes aim at the green subsidies that inflate our bills.

There is much work still to do to ensure the market works for consumers.

Let's get smart

OUR exclusive poll of parents has revealed a truly staggering number of kids are using smartphones.

The technology is no doubt useful for curious young minds — but it’s given new avenues for bullies and scammers.

Letting kids spend hours on their screens isn’t just affecting their sleep and mental health, it’s going to leave them unable to hold a conversation.

As adults we need to be far more careful about what our kids are up to online — and get off our own phones, too.

Let’s try to get the smartphone revolution right.
