Madeleine McCann’s parents have 'not lost hope' despite prime suspect's lawyer saying he may never be charged

MADELEINE McCann's parents have "not lost hope" despite a lawyer for the prime suspect into their daughter's disappearance saying he may never be charged.

Key suspect Christian B is unlikely to be charged according to a sensational claim by his lawyer Friedrich Fulscher.

The 44-year-old convicted paedophile and rapist was named by German police in June last year as the lone person responsible for Madeleine’s abduction and murder.

But despite months of insisting he is their main focus, and that Madeleine is dead despite no body having been found, he has still not been charged.

Kate and Gerry have been left on tenterhooks wondering if they would ever find out their daughter’s fate after the German national became a prime suspect.

But the couple from Rothley, Leics, have indicated they are not beaten yet as well wishers continue to support them and given them renewed hope.

A new post on the Find Maddie Campaign website, endorsed by the McCanns, states: "Our resolve is still the same and we have not lost hope of finding Madeleine or finding out what happened to her.”

It adds: “Thank you for continuing to be by our side and keeping hope alive.”

The page is run by a close un-named pal of the couple and is viewed across the world.

The digital co-ordinator wrote, beside an iconic picture of Madeleine with the word Hope: “It’s been a while since I posted."

Blue Stevenson posted: "I still believe she is out there alive somewhere.”

Mary O’Sullivan wrote: "Please God someday you will find her. I think of the anguish you must constantly feel. I pray for her return to you." Sharon

Duane added: “Hopefully 2021 is the year of finding Madeleine.”

GLIMMER OF HOPE

Three-year-old Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007.

She had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings while her parents were dining in a nearby tapas restaurant with pals.

Heart doctor Gerry and ex GP turned medical worker Kate cling onto a glimmer of hope that their daughter could still be alive. She would now be aged 17.

In a New Year post they vowed to carry on searching for their daughter with “hope, energy and determination.”

Christian B, who has not been quizzed over Madeleine's kidnap, has maintained his innocence.

His lawyer told a new documentary called Prime Suspect: The Madeleine McCann Case: ''My client hasn't been charged with anything.

“He is under investigation and under suspicion. I have to assume that they (German prosecutors) do not have any concrete evidence.”

Meanwhile Kate and Gerry have been rocked by another setback in their long-running battle to silence a former cop who claims their daughter is dead.

The anguished pair must now wait until spring to find out if the European Court of Human Rights finally allows their legal appeal to go ahead or throws it out.

They had been due to be told by the end of last year but now face an agonising wait in their civil action which has been “dragging on” for nearly 12 years.

An ECHR spokesperson told The Sun Online:  "A judge is due to rule of the admissibility of their application over the coming months.

"It is still under consideration and it is expected to be notified to the Portuguese Government by the end of April."

A close pal of Kate and Gerry said: "It drags on and on. They go one step forward then two two back. It’s caused them so much anguish over the years and they just want to draw a line under it.

"It’s never been about seeking damages but simply trying to stop false and malicious accusations being spouted. They still have no idea if their appeal in their fight for justice will be granted, or not.”

It is based on their civil feud with former Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral, who claimed in his best-selling book that Madeleine’s parents had accidentally killed their daughter and disposed of her body.

In ensuing claims and appeals, Mr Amaral was cleared of any wrong doing which led to the McCanns’ latest action being filed against the country’s top court rather than the ex officer.
