A man died Saturday night after exchanging gunfire with Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies at a home in Centennial, the sheriff’s office said Sunday.
The man suffered a fatal gunshot wound, but it was not immediately clear whether he was killed by deputies or died by suicide, sheriff’s spokeswoman Ginger Delgado said.
The incident began around 9:45 p.m. at a home in the 5200 block of South Jerico Street when deputies were called for a fight between two men — one armed with a gun — at a family gathering, she said in a statement.
Deputies tried to talk to one of the men when they arrived, but he went into a garage and “barricaded himself,” Delgado said. He then opened the garage door and shot at deputies, who shot back, firing multiple times, she said.
A SWAT team was called out and residents were told to shelter in place, Delgado said. Neighboring homes were evacuated. When the SWAT team arrived, they went into the garage and found the man shot to death.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team is investigating the deputies’ use of force. The Arapahoe County coroner will determine whether the man died by suicide or was killed by deputies.
