A fire is raging near to Geneva Airport after reports of multiple explosions at a nearby building.

The building is reportedly a new reception centre for asylum seekers, as well as the future building of the international police (PI).

Incoming flights are being held or diverted but take-offs are at the discretion of pilots according to Ignace Jeannerat, a spokesperson for the airport.

Pilots still have some runway to work with, but that situation could change.

The incident comes as delegations from around the world are making their way to Geneva for the World Health Assembly.

Some local news outlets have reported that the refugee centre was still under construction.

TdG reports that the building is on the edge of one of the runways.

The outlet also reported that several witnesses heard explosions.

Harrowing footage from the scene shows massive clouds of billowing black smoke coming off the building.

In other videos shared online, the boom of explosions can be heard as flashes of fire appear amid the smoke.

Images from flight maps show multiple aircraft bunched up near to Geneva as they await updates.
