Mum, 35, and her baby killed in horror head-on crash after 'driving into path of oncoming lorry' | The Sun

A MUM and her baby were killed in a head-on crash when they drove into the path of an oncoming lorry, an inquest heard.

Nichola Jane Davies, 35, and 11-month-old Amelia Skye Davies died at the scene.

Ms Davies' cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries and Amelia's cause of death was head injuries, senior coroner for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, John Ellery said.

Nichola was driving her Ford on the A41 towards Withchurch and the HGV was driving on the correct side in the opposite direction.

Dash cam footage shows the Ford was partially on the wrong side and moved entirely onto the wrong side upon impact of the crash.

An investigator said: "The driver of the Volvo illuminated his headlights and commenced emergency braking and strayed partially onto the verge," the investigator said in the report.

"There's no evidence to show the driver of the Ford took any action to avoid the collision."

Mr Ellery said: "It appears that Nichola has gone into the path of a lorry. One has to consider whether it was deliberate.

"No one knows what was Nichola's state of mind that day. For me to say that she did it deliberately would be speculation. Nichola was suffering from extreme anxiety and distress.

"There's no evidence to believe Nichola wanted to harm Amelia.

"She left home saying she needed to take Amelia to hospital but she drove 15 miles in a different direction.

"Sadly Nichola has crossed the road into the path of an oncoming HGV driver. The driver could do nothing to avoid the collision.

"As to intent, I've received no evidence that it was deliberate."

Mr Ellery gave a narrative conclusion, saying: "Nichola died when she drove into the path of an oncoming HGV while suffering from extreme anxiety and distress."

He added: "Amelia died after her mother drove into the path of a HGV while suffering extreme anxiety and distress."
