Mumsnet user is mocked for asking ‘what happened to the planes on 9/11’ – wondering if they ‘crash landed’ or ‘continued flying’
- Sunday marked the 22nd anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on US soil
- Over 2,500 people were killed when two planes crashed into the Twin Towers
A Mumsnet user has been widely mocked for asking ‘what happened to the planes on 9/11’ before musing if they ‘crash landed’ or ‘continued flying’.
Monday marked the 22nd anniversary of when terrorists seized and crashed two airliners into the World Trade Centre’s Twin Towers in New York City, killing 2,753 people. A third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon, murdering a further 184 people.
A fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers overpowered the hijackers.
The al-Qaeda terror attacks are the deadliest on US soil since the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour during the Second World War.
Yet one person thought the anniversary was the perfect time to answer a question which had been playing on their mind for two decades.

The Mumsnet user was widely mocked for asking what happened to the planes after they crashed into the Twin Towers during the 9/11 terror attacks
Taking to UK parenting forum Mumsnet, they asked: ‘Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.
‘What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I’m so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn’t mention anything, either..

‘Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?’
The user was understandably widely mocked with one person saying the question was in ‘poor taste’.
One response read: ‘How could anyone seriously think that a plane would crash into a skyscraper and then just continue flying?’
One person asked ‘Have you not seen the footage?’ while another simply said: ‘”did they continue flying?” Are you serious?’
A third person told them to ‘honestly educate yourself’ and to ‘read some articles it’s not difficult?’ while adding an emoji of a lady face-palming herself.
While a fourth queried whether the question was real. They wrote: ‘Even if you don’t remember it happening, surely you’re able to search 9/11 on youtube and you’d see the planes didn’t just pass through the other side? This can’t be real.’
The user went on to explain they did not remember the terrorist attack as they were only aged two when it happened and that they had recently been handed a case study researching mass disasters.

‘I really didn’t mean this to be in poor taste, I truly didn’t know what may have happened afterwards,’ they added. ‘By continue flying I don’t mean ongoing as if nothing happened, of course that isn’t the case.
‘I am genuinely sorry if I have upset anybody by this post.’
They added: ‘I do sincerely apologise to those that have been upset or offended by my question.
‘I really did try my best to word it as sensitively as possible. I know it’s silly of me and I probably do come across insensitive and stupid. As mentioned, I was only 2 at the time of the disaster.’
Others leapt to the user’s defence and even offered advice of where to find the information.
‘Oh don’t be daft, it’s human interest to be curious when something so horrific happens. There are numerous programmes on the subject too,’ one quipped.
While another user didn’t think the question was in poor taste.
‘I don’t think it’s in poor taste,’ they wrote. ‘I’m sure it has been widely covered in the news, but if your focus was on other aspects of it eg the rescue, or history of why it happened then it’s easy (and normal) to have huge gaps in your knowledge.’
