A very rare fish with human-like teeth was spotted by beachgoers in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The photo of a mysterious looking fish was posted on Facebook earlier this week by Jennette’s Pier – a fishing destination in Nags Head. The photograph shows the fish, which weighed around nine pounds, with open mouth and human-like teeth inside. The fish was reportedly reeled in by Nathan Martin, a regular on the pier, who was out fishing with his twin brother.
The creature has now been identified as a sheepshead fish.
Sheepsheads have several rows of molars in their mouths that they use for crushing oysters and other prey.
It is believed to have received its name because its mouth looks like that of a sheep.
Sheepshead fish are usually found near rocks, jetties, reefs, and even bridges.
They are also known as the “convict fish” because of their black and white stripes.
Officials with the North Carolina aquarium were quoted by local media outlets as saying that these fish are extremely difficult to catch, but taste great.
Mr Martin said he had been hoping to catch a sheepshead fish when he came face-to-face with a “mouth full of teeth”.
He told McClatchy News: “It’s a very good fight when you’re fighting on the line, it’s a really good catch, and it tastes very good.”
The photo of the fish has caused a massive stir online, with people finding it hard to believe that a fish can have “better teeth than a human”.
One Facebook user wrote: “I know people who would love to have that many teeth.”
Another added: “That fish has better teeth than me.”
A third said: “Is this where dentures come from?”
A fourth said: “Yum! Best tasting fish in the sea! Craving some fish tacos now.”
Another added: “I’ve never in my life seen a fish like this! Crazy!!”
