A tiny newborn baby has been found abandoned in the rubbish bin of an airplane toilet.

Airport staff in Mauritius discovered the baby boy while screening the plane during a routine customs check, after the Air Mauritius plane had landed from Madagascar on New Year’s Day.

Following the discovery, they rushed the newborn to a public hospital for treatment, the BBC reports.

A 20-year-old woman from Madagascar, suspected of having given birth on the flight, was arrested a short while later.

She initially denied being the boy’s mother and was made to undergo a medical examination, which confirmed that she had in fact given birth while on board.

She was subsequently placed under police surveillance at the hospital, with both her and the baby said to be doing well.

The new mother, who arrived in Mauritius on a two-year work permit, will be questioned upon her release from the hospital and charged with abandoning a newborn.

Last month, an abandoned newborn baby girl was reportedly saved by a female dog and her puppies after they kept her warm in a field overnight.

Locals in the Chattisgarh province of India claim that someone had left the baby there during the night, naked and with her umbilical cord still attached.

They add that the newborn was found by a dog, which cuddled up with the baby all night, along with its puppies.

Found nestled alongside a litter of puppies, the baby was completely uninjured and discovered after locals heard her crying, it is claimed.

One local, said it was a “miracle” the baby had survived the night, as stray dogs can be vicious.

An investigation was subsequently launched, with officers searching for the little girl’s parents.
