One dead, one missing after small boat carrying 13 overturns in a Colorado state park

One person died and another is missing after a boat capsized Sunday evening at Lake Pueblo State Park, state officials said in a release.

Reports that a small boat, carrying eight children and five adults, overturned near the park’s north picnic area came in around 7:30 p.m., Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Travis Duncan said in a release. The boat had faced high winds before capsizing.

State rangers in a patrol boat rescued eight children and three adults from the 60-degree water, Duncan said. Each of them were taken to hospitals in the area to treat hypothermia.

The rangers also recovered the body of one of the adults, Duncan said. The body was taken to the Pueblo County Coroner to be identified and to determine the cause of death.

State officials brought in the Marine Evidence Recovery Team, which is using sonar to search for the missing adult, Duncan said. Search conditions are complicated because the boat capsized in water as deep as 90 feet.

Boaters should avoid the middle channel of Lake Pueblo between North Marina and Rock Creek Cove, Lake Pueblo State Park Manager Joe Stadterman said in the release.

Additional information was not immediately available.
