Pedestrian, 40, dies after ambulance crashes into bus stop on the way to hospital in horror scenes

A WOMAN has died after an ambulance crashed on the way to hospital in horror scenes today.

The 40-year-old pedestrian was killed shortly before 9.20am this morningnear Redhill, Surrey.


The ambulance reportedly careered off the road while on the way to hospital and hit her as she waited at a bus shelter.

Paramedics battled to save her life alongside firefighters who raced to the crash.

But the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.

'BIG NOISE'

Photos taken at the scene show the wrecked ambulance, which left the main road and appeared to collide with a bus shelter.

A shocked local resident said: "We are living upstairs so I heard it. I heard quite a big noise, it sounded very big, fast and loud.

"There were a lot of police and ambulances here, they came really quickly actually.

"It’s all a bit of a shock. It’s something you don’t want to see.".

Surrey Police spokesman are appealing for witnesses after this morning's tragedy.

A police spokesman said: "Sadly, despite best efforts of paramedics, a 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from officers."

The northbound A23 was closed while specialist roads policing officers investigated and gathered evidence.

Brighton Road stretches from Gatwick Airport through the West Sussex village of Salfords – where the crash happened – and up to East Surrey Hospital.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) offered their "sincere condolences" to the family of the woman who died in the crash involving one of its vehicles.

A SECAmb spokesman said: "Following a road traffic collision involving a Trust ambulance and a pedestrian on Brighton Road, Salfords, at 9.20am today, we can confirm that sadly the pedestrian died at the scene.

"We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family involved at this difficult time.

"The circumstances of the collision are being investigated by Surrey Police and we are therefore unable to comment further."
