People turning up to get their Covid-19 vaccine could be offered a free bag of weed to go with it, if a group of cannabis activists get their way.
DC Marijuana Justice [DCMJ], an organisation campaigning for the legalisation of cannabis in the US capital, seek to encourage people who are sceptical about the vaccine by adding the enticement of a free joint.
Adam Eidinger, one of the group’s co-founders, says “If you believe in the science that supports medical cannabis, you should believe the science that supports the efficacy of the vaccine.”
The initiative, dubbed Joints for Jabs, is expected to be ready to begin when Washington DC vaccination clinics open, according to a DCMJ press release.
“We are looking for ways to safely celebrate the end of the pandemic and we know nothing brings people together like cannabis,” Nikolas Schiller, another of the group’s co-founders, told Forbes.
“DCMJ believes that cannabis should be consumed safely and responsibly, and the pandemic has made this incredibly difficult for many adults to share their homegrown cannabis,” he added.
“When enough adults are inoculated with the coronavirus vaccine, it will be time to celebrate – not just the end of the pandemic, but the beginning of the end of cannabis prohibition in the United States.”
DCMJ’s plans for a bigger DCMJ marijuana giveaway to celebrate the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden have been put on hold until the coronavirus pandemic is under control and it’s safe to hold larger gatherings. The group expect they could be ready to stage the event in July.
However, the giveaway will take a slightly different from to previous years’ giveaways. Instead of handing out joints, DCMJ activists will be handing out baggies of loose cannabis.
And there’s a good reason why: “Four years ago, we handed out over 10,000 joints — and we licked those joints,” Eidinger said. “Today, we think that’s an issue.”
