Pitied thief locked in shop after trying to steal two iPhone 13s

Moment bungling thief tries to steal two iPhones without realising shop doors were locked behind him – before shopkeeper lets him go and takes pity on him amid cost-of-living crisis

A young man attempted to steal two iPhones from a shop in Yorkshire but had to sheepishly hand the devices back when he couldn’t escape out the front door. 

CCTV captured the moment when a ginger-haired man begs to be let out of the shop while he blamed his friend outside for why he tried to steal two iPhone 13 pros. 

The man attempted the theft on the Phone Market shop on Sunday, December, 4, in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire at 4 pm.

He was let go by the shop keeper who pitied him amid the cost-of-living crisis.

The video showed the man wearing Nike trainers, a black jacket and a light blue hoodie. The man had ginger hair and pretended to be a customer in the shop.

The shop keeper handed over two devices before the man attempted to make his get away through the front door. 

The attempted thief awkwardly realised there were security systems in place and was locked in the shop with the shop keeper and his assistant behind the counter.

He embarrassingly handed the two phones back to the shop keeper and plonked them in his hand and claimed ‘my mate outside made me do it’.

He paced around the shop before he rattled the door and asked to be let out. 

The calm shop assistants pitied the man due to thousands of people struggling in the cost-of-living crisis.

Many people have resulted to theft to survive and it is not just electronic goods that have been targeted. Cheese, bread and solar panels have also been on the hit list to help families save money. 

The shop keeper released the doors and told him they would usually call the police. 

The shop released a statement explaining why they didn’t call 999.

A Phone Market spokesman said: ‘Many of you may have come across a video of an attempted theft at our store today.

‘As much as we do not condone the theft we would like to reach out to this particular individual.

The shop keepers pitied the man and released a statement reaching out to him stating ‘violence is not the answer’ and ‘times are difficult’

‘Times are difficult for many of us at the moment, so if you are struggling to put food on the table, please come visit us in store to find out how we can help.

‘To those on social media asking why we didn’t beat him up – violence is not the answer.

‘The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said “Be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you”.’

The two shopkeepers pitied the man as they explained they knew how times are difficult in the cost-of-living crisis. 

Many people across the nation are worried about how they are going to live over the next year as many pay rises aren’t keeping up with inflation.
