Prince George’s mysterious reply to dog walker asking his name sparks confusion

Prince George once baffled a dog walker when he mysteriously told her his name was "Archie" — months before his cousin was born.

But there's an explanation behind his strange remark, and there are fears it may have added to the ongoing tension between the Cambridges and the Sussexes.

In January 2019, a woman walking her dog in the Berkshire countryside saw the prince playing with his siblings and grandmother Carole Middleton by a stream near the Middleton family home, we reported at the time.

When young George, then five, came over to pet the woman's dog she asked him for his name — but didn't quite get the response she was expecting.

The unidentified woman told The Sun at the time: "I was asked by a police minder not to take a photo of the children, which I didn't, but George started stroking my dog.

"Just to be friendly I engaged in a bit of small talk and I asked George what his name was, even though obviously I knew it.

"To my astonishment he said 'I'm called Archie' with a big smile on his face.

"I don't know why he calls himself Archie but kids often play with their names and I think it's lovely."

The odd encounter made headlines at the time, but the mystery deepened even further a few months later in May when Meghan Markle gave birth to her first child – named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

People were baffled as to how George seemed to know his baby cousin's name months before he was born, or why he told a stranger that name was really his.

However it was later reported that 'Archie' has long been George's nickname in a long tradition of royals having pet names for one another, such as 'Lilibet' for Queen Elizabeth.

Marie Claire reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton may even have been slightly put out by Meghan and Prince Harry "stealing" their son's nickname for their firstborn, although neither couple have ever commented on this.

In any case, George has plenty of other nicknames given to him by family members including 'PG Tips', 'Georgie' and even 'Little Grape' before he was born.

It's also been theorised that George has been trained from a young age not to tell strangers his real name for security purposes.
