Prince William and Harry’s ‘private’ cousin set to inherit Diana’s family estate

Neither Prince William nor Prince Harry will inherit the childhood home of their mother, Princess Diana.

Instead the sprawling 13,500-acre Althorp estate in Northamptonshire likely to be inherited by a comparatively little-known member of the family – William and Harry's cousin, 27-year-old Louis Spencer.

Louis, also known as Viscount Althorp, is set to benefit from a old Spencer family tradition that the property passes down the male line, even if the heir has an older sister.

When Princess Diana's father, Edward, died in 1992 it might have been expected that the estate would be shared between his four surviving children.

However, tradition dictated that it actually went to his youngest child, Charles, who at the time was just 27, as he was his only surviving son.

That tradition appears to still be in place, reports MyLondon, which means one day the estate will be passed on to Earl Spencer's oldest son, Louis – even though he has three older sisters.

He was just a toddler at the time of Princess Diana's tragic death in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Diana’s brother Earl Spencer, who has seven children from three marriages, built a garden temple memorial on the estate in her memory, as well as a museum that displays her wedding dress and other personal belongings.

His son Louis, who is already a viscount but will become the tenth Earl Spencer when his father dies, is said to be a very private person despite having aspirations to be an actor.

A source close to Louis told The Daily Telegraph: "He’s super private and gets on quietly with his thing. He’s a very talented actor and, I think, will be a brilliant one… He’s very low-key and genuine, decent and kind – and tall.”

Jonathan Shalit, chairman of the InterTalent agency, said of Louis: "In terms of judging his potential there’s what he looks like and his family name. The Americans will love him, in particular. He'll get some good roles from his name alone. And he's good looking."

But unless Louis breaks with tradition and allows the estate to pass to his older sister, model and socialite Lady Kitty Spencer, he might be too busy running the massive family estate to do much acting.

The current Earl Spencer has said is happy with the tradition of the home passing to his eldest son, commenting in 2015: "I would be totally relaxed about Kitty inheriting it, but… if I chose Kitty it would be against all the tradition that goes with Althorp."
