Prince William takes over as owner of notorious 200-year-old Dartmoor prison

    Prince William has taken over his father’s £330million property portfolio, known as the Duchy of Cornwall, following the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

    The eldest son of the reigning monarch (King Charles III) obtains possession of the duchy with William also receiving his father's Highgrove home alongside the infamous HMP Dartmoor prison.

    Operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, Dartmoor was opened in 1809 and is a Category C men's prison which provides its inmates vocational training and university courses with the aim of reintroducing them back into society with valuable skills.

    Some of the vocational training that Dartmoor provides includes the likes of electronics; brickwork and carpentry; painting and decorating courses; industrial cleaning and desktop publishing.

    By 1920, over 100 years after the prison was opened, Dartmoor began to build a reputation for housing some of Britain's most infamous criminals, including the likes of serial killer John George Haigh and enforcer Jack "the Hat" McVitie.

    The poor conditions of the prison has been an issue since the 1930s and in 2001, board members condemned its conditions and highlighted urgent repairs that had to be done. and its need for repairs.

    Despite an announcement in 2019 that Dartmoor would close in 2023, negotiations ensued with King Charles' estate when he was the Prince of Wales.

    The end result of the talks was that the prison would remain open for the foreseeable future.

    The prison has a Grade II heritage listing, which means the building has particular historic or architectural significance while the Dartmoor Prison Museum has been established, due to its history within the Napoleonic Wars in the 1800s.
