The Queen paid a heartwarming tribute to Prince Philip during his funeral with a historic accessory.

She wore a Richmond Brooch, which she inherited from her grandmother Queen Mary.

Her Majesty the Queen was in attendance, along with the couple’s four children, Prince Charles, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.

Buckingham Palace confirmed details of the Duke’s ceremonial funeral, but little was known about what the women at the ceremony would wear.

Her Majesty was dressed in a pair of pearl and diamond earrings and her pearl necklaces.

The brooch itself was given to the Queen’s grandmother as a wedding present in 1893.

Bethan Holt, author of The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Royal Modern Style, told Hello! there is a "long history of protocol when it comes to mourning dress."

Ms Holt said: "This is the first royal funeral of the Internet age so I think the focus will be on respect and a nod to tradition but with some personal touches which symbolise the Queen and Prince Philip's life together – they will be aware of the millions of people tuning in to watch the funeral from around the world."
