After being found guilty of five of the six counts she faced, Ghislaine Maxwell now faces the likelihood of years behind bars.
The socialite is now at the centre of a conspiracy theory which links her to one of the most powerful accounts on Reddit.
Online sleuths have pointed to a number of clues they say show Ghislaine was behind the massively popular u/maxwellhill handle.
The account hasn’t posted since July 2nd , the date of her arrest, which users say is the most telling sign that she is behind the account.
u/maxwellhill has been one of the most active Reddit accounts, posting most days for the previous 14 years. The account mainly posted big news stories from around the world.
The account also acted as a moderator for the articles. There were millions of users who visited the page each day.
It also received a million upvotes- the Reddit equivalent of likes and became one of the most top rated on the site.
But since the arrest of Ghislaine was arrested, the account hasn’t posted any new content.
There is no definite proof that Ghislaine is behind the account but online sleuths also point to the fact that the page appears to have never shared stories about Jeffrey Epstein despite the case being a huge news event.
The theory was forgotten in recent months but reemerged on TikTok this week, with one user re-sharing the theories claiming “It still holds up.”
Others said on Reddit last year: "Not confirmed, but research suggests that /u/maxwellhill, the Reddit account with the 8th most link karma of all time, powermod of frontpage subs like r/worldnews and r/technology, first account to reach a million Karma, is/was operated by Ghislaine Maxwell."
The post reached lots of users and was shared thousands of times.
Tech website Gizmodo wrote a profile on u/maxwellhill in 2011 calling it the page "the Most Successful Man/Woman/??? on Reddit."
They wrote then: "Maxwellhill isn't just trying to be mysterious; he/she is trying to be successful. Maxwellhill's ascent to power was deliberate and skillful.
"The million karma points were a goal, not an accident."
Ghislaine Maxwell’s defence lawyers had insisted she was a victim of vindictive prosecution devised to give justice to the women affected by Epstein after he killed himself awaiting trial in 2019.
Her brother, Kevin Maxwell, said: “We firmly believe in our sister’s innocence,” in a written statement. He claims the family still believes she will be vindicated on appeal.
