‘Romeo’ lag had ‘inappropriate’ flings with prison guard and nurse behind bars

An inmate formed an ‘inappropriate relationship’ with two different female prison workers during his stretch behind bars.

While locked up, Harri Pullen allegedly had sex with both prison nurse Elyse Hibbs, of Newbridge, Gwent, and prison officer Ruth Shmylo, of Treforest, Pontypridd – both 25.

Hibbs has now been sent down after she admitted to flirty phone calls with Pullen.

Shmylo is now facing trial in September but denied any miscounts over the alleged fling during her time working at a category B prison.

The court heard the details after 25-year-old Pullen, identified as the Romeo convict, was revealed today during a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.

Pullen was jailed for five years back in 2019 for his role in a drugs gang distributing cocaine and heroin in South Wales.

He was initially sent to HMP Parc, in Bridgend, South Wales – where he came into contact with both prison workers.

But was later transferred to HMP Manchester after concerns were raised about his relationship with staff.

Pullen had an additional four years and nine months added to his sentence when a hidden phone was discovered up his backside during the transfer.

Healthcare worker Hibbs met the prisoner while giving him medical treatment in her jail and he contacted her on Instagram.

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe claimed that the inmate used his mother and a friend to initiate contact with Hibbs after he searched for her on Instagram.

He said: "The calls between them were flirtatious. They talk about the prison, staff within the prison, he tells her that he loves her and she tells him he doesn't know her to love her.

"He tells her that he loves her and she tells him that she loves him too. The calls included references to the defendant's existing partner and the inmate continuously suggested he would replace him and be in a relationship with her."

Hibbs quit her post at HMP Parc in July 2021 and was arrested a week later and admitted to exchanging messages with the prisoner.

But claimed she was scared to end the contact after he had previously threatened her.

Shmylo will stand trial over an alleged affair with the same prisoner while she was employed as a custody officer at the 1,652-capacity HMP Parc Prison in Bridgend, Wales.

Claire Wilks, defending Shmylo, said the alleged evidence the prosecution was relying on was not relevant to her case.

She told the court a kiss with an inmate had been captured on CCTV, adding: "That doesn't relate to Harri Pullen the inmate who she is said to have had a relationship with.

The charge against her states: "While acting as a public officer, namely a prison custody officer, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner."

Cardiff Crown Court heard the charges relate to alleged phone calls between Shymlo and the inmate but at a previous hearing was told she "strongly denies" the case.

Prosecutors have been ordered to serve transcripts of the alleged phone calls between the pair before a trial planned for September.
