Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told Sky News how such a “false flag operation”, which would see Russia create a fake attack or incident, such as attacking its own troops with special forces now likely amid major fears Russia could roll into Ukraine on Wednesday. The warning comes despite British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden insisting on Monday there was still a “window for diplomacy” to avoid all-out war with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It comes as an estimated 200,000 Russian troops are stacked up on Ukraine’s border as Ms Truss stressed there could be an “imminent invasion” by Russia amid the highest tensions between the West and President Vladimir Putin for months.
The Foreign Secretary was asked by Sky’s Kay Burley how quickly they could march on the capital Kyiv.
Ms Truss replied: “Very, very quickly, they have troops stationed around Ukraine.
“There could be an attack on Kyiv, there could be an attack from the east.”

But in a concerning revelation, Ms Truss stressed: “What we also suspect is there could be a false flag operation.
“There could be false claims that they have been provoked, to give a pretext for invasion.”
Speaking to Express.co.uk last month, former British spy Philip Ingram MBE warned of such a “false flag” tactic being launched.
The expert also predicted an increase in rhetoric about threats into Russia as he warned of how President Putin can construct a narrative for war.

He predicted how President Putin could also come up with something that will suggest there are “separatist organisations operating in Ukraine and in Russia”.
He also warned that Putin’s elite special forces units could be used to launch fabricated “terror attacks” inside Russia and even on Russian citizens, as well as in Ukraine.
“And even terrorist-style attacks inside Russia itself, false flag, carried out by Wagner or GRU to give him an excuse to go across the border.”
