Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he is concerned that today’s youth are becoming “a generation of wimps and weak people”.

The movie-star-turned-politician thinks the younger generations may be too “weak” and “too pampered”.

Schwarzenegger, 76, said: “You can only strengthen your character and become a really strong person inside if you have resistance, if you fail, if you get up again and if you work hard.

“Anyone that tries to baby themselves and pamper themselves… it’s over. You’re never going to get there.”

Speaking on US radio, Schwarzenegger said that younger people must learn to “accept pain, misery and discomfort”.

He went on to compare different generations against the accomplishments of first-generation Americans. “Is it people that slept in? Is it people that were wimping out? This, ‘Oh, I want to feel good. Oh, I want to be comfortable.’ No.

“This is where ballsy women and men that went out there at five in the morning and got up, and they struggled … they fought … they worked their butts off.

“That’s what made this country great. And so now let’s continue this way.

“Let’s go and teach kids to be tough… go out and do sports… to struggle… and go through these kinds of painful moments sometimes,” he said.

The Austrian-born US citizen, who was promoting his new book Be Useful, said the more “struggles”, the greater the success.

Schwarzenegger added that youngsters need to be more active.

“This is the most important thing for kids, is to create a goal, to create a vision, something that they can chase, because the chase is so much more fun than just going through emptiness and just wandering around through life, not what you’re going to do next, not to have a go and stuff like this.

“That’s why I say to kids: turn off the iPhone … Turn off your phone, turn off the computer, turn off the iPad, turn off everything, and just sit there and think, what is it that you’re passionate about?

“What is it that you want to do? What do you want to chase? Because that is so important because you can have the best airplane in the world, but if the pilot doesn’t know where to go, he’s eventually going to go and crash-land somewhere.”
