RefaceAl was launched in 2011. In the beginning, the development team worked as NeoCortext. They worked on improving the existing machine learning methods and targeted to develop a face replacement app for images and videos by using artificial intelligence technology. The company reached the creation of their newest app Doublicat after going through several stages. Sergey Tokarev said, “The development of RefaceAl technology became the most important and the longest stage.” It took them more than three years to develop a unique AI-based face replacing technology, but it created the identity of the company.
The first success for the company was the creation of the Reflect app. This app allows users to replace faces in photos.
Elon Musk, a technology entrepreneur and industrial designer, shared some of the results of Reflect on Twitter. It provided the RefaceAI production an important promotion on the market. Tokarev said, “Media around the world began to post and show these photos, and the number of Reflect app downloads was growing significantly.” It boosted the morale of the development team. They kept on improving face replacement technology and eventually released Doublicat app at the beginning of 2020. The Doublicat app allows users to replace a face in GIF.
Uniqueness of RefaceAl Technology
Sergey Tokarev, the investor of RefaceAl, told the media that the success secret of Doublicat was its uniqueness. Most of the face replacement apps in the global markets are based on CGA (computer-generated imaginary) while the Doublicat app is based on GAN, a machine-learning algorithm. Tokarev said, “We use only artificial intelligence. This way, we make the final images maximum realistic.”
RefaceAl’s Next Goal
According to Tokarev, they are not at the final stage of monetization of the face replacement technology. However, the development of Reflect and Doublicatopened upwide commercial prospects for the company. The face replacement technology can be used by cinemas, advertisers, and game developers. In fact, RefaceAI has already successfully worked with a cinema network in Ukraine for creating a special “kinoselfie” offer to cinema users.
The company is also working on determining the authenticity of images and photos as some people may use these apps for bad purposes. For this purpose, photos and gifs created in RefaceAI apps are protected with logos and watermarks.
According to Tokarev, the company is now working on the replacement of the faces in videos. The aim of RefaceAl is to produce the most realistic results in the field of face replacement technology. The best thing about the company is the use of its own technology truly based on artificial intelligence.
