Experienced sheep farmer receives death threats and hateful abuse for using traditional lambing method after putting a dead lamb’s skin over a live one to protect the animal

  • Gareth Wyn Jones claims a man threatened to slit his throat and kill his children

An experienced sheep farmer has received death threats and hateful abuse over his use of a traditional lambing method that saw him place a dead lamb’s skin over a live animal in attempt to protect it by persuading the dead lamb’s mother to accept and feed the orphan lamb.

Gareth Wyn Jones was blasted as ‘cruel’ after sharing a video of him placing a dead lamb’s skin over a live one – a practice that has been done for hundreds of years.

The father-of-three was met with huge backlash despite having explained that the lamb had died of natural causes – and its ‘jacket’ would protect the live animal.

He has now complained to police after one man allegedly threatened to slit his throat and kill his children over the farming technique.

In a hate-filled voice message, a man from the Netherlands told Mr Jones, of Conwy, North Wales: ‘I come and cut your throat.’

‘I hope to kill your children, you motherf****r f****r idiot. I hope you die same way.’

Mr Jones said he had faced abuse before but felt he had to tell police of the threat.

The farmer said: ‘When you hear something like this in a voice message, it seems a bit more real.

‘This guy is only an hour away by airplane and it wouldn’t take him long to find out where we live.

‘It’s left me disappointed with elements of the society we live in. I believe in free speech but this was hate speech, pure and simple. I cannot take it lightly.

‘I want this man found and put in handcuffs. People need to understand that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable.’

Mr Jones said he had installed additionally CCTV as a security measure at his farm.

He noted that as a farmer he is often working all day and throughout the year to produce crops.

‘I don’t want to be alone in my shed at 2am or 3am thinking there’s a man outside with a knife in his hand,’ he shared.

‘This is a serious issue. I have a wife, children, father, mother and friends. When these messages popped up on my phone on Sunday evening, after a hard day’s work, they were not nice to hear.

‘What disappointed me most was seeing the man’s Facebook page – someone shared a screenshot of it. In his profile, he describes himself as a “kind man” – this is a kind man who left voicemails saying he’s going to come over and cut my throat.’

Mr Jones added: ‘He is just a nasty, sad human being.’

North Wales Police have said the force is aware of the incident and it is ‘currently being investigated.’
