Sixth man charged after basketballer fatally stabbed at Docklands

A sixth man has been charged after the fatal stabbing death of 23-year-old rising basketball star Alier Riak at Docklands earlier this month.

Homicide squad detectives charged a 19-year-old Shepparton man on Tuesday night with violent disorder and affray.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Another five men have been charged over the alleged March 13 attack on Mr Riak, who was from Western Australia, and his 26-year-old brother, Kuol.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard fresh details of the alleged murder when one of those previously charged applied for bail on Monday last week.

The court heard 23-year-old Alier Riak had spent the evening in the Docklands area celebrating his birthday with his girlfriend, brothers and friends.

Police alleged at the time that when the brothers left a music venue in the early hours of March 13, they were set upon by five males on Bourke Street over a “perceived issue from earlier in the morning”.

When Alier Riak attempted to reason with the unknown group, police alleged, the accused men produced weapons and attacked the 23-year-old’s older brother.

“During the unprovoked, violent disorder, the deceased came to the aid of his brother and was viciously assaulted by the offending group. During this attack, the deceased was fatally stabbed multiple times and his brother was also stabbed multiple times, requiring emergency medical intervention,” court documents read.

“Upon the arrival of the police … members of the offending group continued to harass and antagonise the two victims as they lay in the middle of Bourke Street with serious injuries, prior to fleeing the scene.”

Alier Riak, a promising basketball player who had last month signed to play with the semi-professional team Darwin Salties in the Northern Territory, died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital soon after the attack.

Aron Gebregorgis, 21, of Tarneit, and Teamrat Kassa, 19, of Derrimut, were both charged with murder earlier this month.

Daniel Deng, 22, of Taylors Hill, and Emmanuel Lado, 21, of Wollert, were charged with violent disorder and affray – the same charges faced by the 19-year-old Shepparton man on Wednesday.

Another man, a 20-year-old from Epping, has been charged with affray and violent disorder and released on bail.

Victoria Police said their investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

They have urged anyone with information about it to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via their website.
