Shocking footage has emerged detailing the extent of the flooding caused by Storm Elsa in New York City last week. Video taken in the city’s subway system on Friday shows shocked train commuters look on as water pours from the levels above onto the platform. There were widespread travel disruptions across the US city last week as the tropical storm brought heavy rainfall and high winds.

The clip was taken at the 149th St Grand Concourse subway station in the Bronx.

A torrent of water can be seen flowing down the stairs and onto the platform.

Passengers are showing trying to alight from a train as the deluge of rainwater continues to fall down the steps.

Eventually, one commuter clad in a baseball cap braves the free-flowing water and exits the carriage.

Similar scenes were reported in other subway stations.

In northern Manhatten, people were filmed wading waste deep in water at the entrance to one flooded station.

The tropical storm causes widespread disruption to the US East Coast on Thursday evening.

Travel chaos in New York City as a result of heavy rain lead the city’s interim transit chief Sarah Feinberg to issue a warning via social media.

New York City Transit Interim president Sarah Feinberg wrote on Twitter: “Drains are working remarkably well, and NYCT crews are, as always, working hard and fast and doing great work.

“Give them room to work and be safe.

“Water is receding,” she added.

“Stay alert for additional storms.”

Storm Elsa eventually moved on from New York City on Friday afternoon.

The US National Weather Service reported wind speed as high as 50mph as the storm moves away from the city towards the east-northeast.

“About 180 miles east-northeast of New York City NY or about 80 miles northeast of Montauk Point NY… Storm Intensity 50 mph,” the service reported.

“Movement Northeast or 45 degrees at 31 mph. As it pertains to this event…this will be the last local statement issued by the National Weather Service in New York NY regarding the effects of tropical cyclone hazards upon the area.”
