It is the wild theory which has been rumbling on for decades – is James Hewitt Prince Harry's father?

The theory, which even Hewitt has denied himself, stems from the revelation that Princess Diana was with Hewitt while she was married to Prince Charles.

They embarked on a five-year affair between 1986 and 1991 after Hewitt had been asked to give the princess riding lessons while he was still in the Household Cavalry.

Diana confirmed the affair in 1995, leading Prince Harry to be dogged by rumours Hewitt was his real father.

But what is the evidence to suggest the theory is simply fantasy?

Well according to Hewitt himself he hadn't even met Princess Diana when Harry was conceived in 1984 so it is chronologically impossible for Hewitt to be the father.

Snaps also emerged last year showing the likeness of Prince Harry to Prince Phillip who died last year.

Sharing a 1957 copy of the Paris Match Magazine which had Philip on the cover, smiling in his naval uniform, a photographer said at the time how he couldn’t believe the Duke of Edinburgh’s likeness to Harry.

Christopher Jackson said: "I was reminded today of this incredible vintage @parismatch_magazine from 1957 I acquired a few years ago. I was blown away the minute I spotted it.

"It always reminds me of the unique, historic reference points that royal photography provides. The front cover features a fantastically suave Prince Philip on tour with The Queen."

People were quick to comment on the pics at the time on Twitter with one stating: "For anyone saying Harry is not Charles’s son, he looks exactly like Philip here!"

Another said: "I thought it was Harry."

While a third added: "This is the first time that I saw Prince Harry looks like his grandfather."

Since then, several snaps have re-emerged of the pair, showing their likeness in adolescence and adulthood.

Sarah Ferguson also spoke out last year saying she was "sick of hearing the rumours" that James Hewitt is Prince Harry's real dad.

A royal insider had told Australian magazine New Idea: "Fergie is nothing short of exasperated that this story crops up every few years.

"It frustrates her to let this go on, which is why she broke ranks. She’s sick of hearing it."

Fergie was close friends with Diana, who died aged 36 in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.

The insider added: "They had their tiffs over the years, but Fergie was one of the few people Diana could turn to with delicate matters.

"Fergie swore to take many of Diana’s secrets to the grave – but Harry not being Charles’ kid is simply just not one of them."

The source also rubbished the rumours that Prince Charles isn't the Duke of Sussex's dad.

They added: "[Diana] hadn’t even met Hewitt when Harry was conceived [in 1984].

"It’s chronologically impossible for [Hewitt] to be the father. It’s all a silly conspiracy theory and she’s absolutely fed up with it.

"There’s absolutely no question that Charles is Harry’s father."
