Tourists ‘kicked out’ of Venice after video shows them surfing on £21k eboards

Two watersport-loving tourists were fined after video emerged showing them foil-surfing up the beauty spot in an Italian UNESCO site.

The short clip, shared by the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, shows the two men riding an eFoil each in the Grand Canal and passing under the Accademia Bridge.

They pass by a river boat full of passengers and head towards to the lagoon.

Other footage recorded by various locals show the two tourists dodging a water bus and a taxi under the Rialto Bridge.

Mr Brugnaro tweeted earlier this week on August 17: Here are two overbearing idiots who make a mockery of the city.

"I ask everyone to help us identify them to punish them even if our weapons are really blunt.

"We urgently need more powers to the Mayors in terms of public safety! To those who spot them, I offer a dinner!"

The mayor later shared updates and explained that the culprits have been identified.

"Thank you all for your cooperation, and soon without giving further details, those responsible will be in our arms: they will be reported as they deserve!" he wrote.

According to local media Il Gazzettino, the two men had been fined €1,500 (£1,272) each for surfing in the waters of Venice.

They were also hit with an antisocial behaviour order and expelled from the city.

The two electronic surfboards, which cost around £20,000 total, were confiscated by the local authorities.

Venice has also instructed lawyers to start proceedings against the pair for damaging the image of the city.

Officials say the surfer's consulates will be contacted as a result of their actions.

Some viewers said it was "cool" to see the tourists doing watersport in the canal and suggested the mayor that they "need more of this".

One wrote: "This is cool to see them doing this."

But some said the canal was already "packed with water taxi and ferries", adding: "Imagine if you even bring private rowing or motor boats".
