An explosion killed two people in a street in the Spanish town of Orio on Tuesday, the Basque regional security department said. The blast happened outside a children’s park located on Arrantzale Street just minutes before 4.30pm BST (5.30pm local time).

The victims are believed to be a man and a woman who had recently broken up, BNO News reported.

The Ertzaintza, the autonomous police force for the Basque Country, has cordoned off the area to investigate what happened.

Local newspaper Diario Vasco said authorities were investigating the incident as possible gender violence.

The first investigations suggested a package carried by one of the deceased could have exploded, police sources told Spain’s news agency EFE.

Orio is a fishing town in the Gipuzkoan province, part of the historical territory of the autonomous community of the Basque Country.

It is home to some 6,000 people and is located near the border with France.
