After an unseasonably mild start to the year, forecasters are warning that the mercury will tumble well below zero for vast swathes of Britain. This cold blast will usher in a sustained period of wintery weather that could see much of the country blanketed in snow, according to WXCharts.
Snow probability maps from WXCharts give a 5-20 percent risk of snow on January 30 for the entire nation.
Long-range temperature maps from the forecaster also show a bone-chilling front moving in for the beginning of February, with the mercury predicted to dip as low as -2C in central Wales and dropping to freezing across the southwest and north of England as well as southern and northwestern Scotland.
From today the mercury will hover at between 2C (35.6F) and 0C (32F) across much of England and southern Wales.
Temperatures will rise slightly tomorrow before plummeting back down on Wednesday, according to the website.
And NetWeather snow risk charts show a brutal snow storm hovering over the North Sea on Thursday morning which threatens to impact the east coast of Britain.

Elsewhere in the UK, WXCharts predicts that much of North Wales will drop as low as -2C (28.4F) along with much of northern England up to the Scottish border.
Thursday will see this cold spell sweep across much of England – enveloping the vast majority of the south east, south west and midlands as well as swathes of Wales.
The mercury will tumble to at least -1C (30.2F) and stay there for much of Friday, WXCharts is predicting.
In its long-range forecast, the BBC also warned of a “more unsettled pattern from late January”.

It said this week “should remain dry over the south with occasional outbreaks of showery rain elsewhere, and temperatures slightly above average”.
The website also warned that settled weather “may change from midweek as a series of fronts move across the country”.
Forecaster Jim Dale said the country could see two to three days of cold weather as the mercury “takes a dip”.
“Ingrained frost” and fog are far more likely – potentially giving motorists a headache.
But on the brighter side, Mr Dale – the author of Weather or Not – claimed that the bright sunshine on cold days was helping to lift many people’s moods.
He told Express.co.uk: “There’s some potential for some deeper frost as we don’t have the cloud cover.
“The wintery sunshine can lift moods.
“It won’t provide you with any vitamin D, nor will it tan or burn you, but winter sunshine through a window will increase your feel-good serotonin levels and help heat your home at the same time.”
