William and Kate stealing the limelight ‘could annoy Charles’, expert speculates

A royal commentator has speculated that Prince Charles could be “annoyed” at being “the supporting act” to the younger royals Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Although William is second in-line to the throne behind his father, experts have increasingly speculated that he is being “shown the ropes” by the Queen before he eventually ascends to the throne.

Recently, the Cambridges accompanied Charles and his wife Camilla to the James Bond premiere and much of the attention focused on Kate’s extravagant golden dress.

Now, royal commentator Richard Eden has speculated that the Duke of Wales might be feeling frustrated at the spotlight supposedly shifting to Wills prematurely.

“I think it’s a very tricky balancing act. We saw at the James Bond premiere, when we had William and Catherine, Camilla and Charles on the red carpet together,” he suggested, on the Mail’s Palace Confidential podcast.

“It did look almost like Charles and Camilla were the supporting act for William and Katherine.”

Host Jo Elvin then asked: “Do you think that annoys Charles?”

“I suspect it does,” Richard suggested. “People always said how he was annoyed by the attention that Diana got, so it’s very tricky if, before he even becomes monarch, he’s being eclipsed by his younger son.

“So courtiers will have to handle this issue very sensitively.

“As we see the Queen visibly aging with her walking stick, it is a problem, because we’ve got a very old monarch, and we’re going to have a very old heir to the throne.”

Earlier this year, one royal expert had predicted that Charles could rewrite the constitution and let William take power immediately after the Queen dies.

But columnist Sarah Vine suggested this was unlikely, noting: “You can’t help feeling that they do slightly want to skip the Charles generation, but I just don’t think that would ever happen.”

With the royals currently focused on climate awareness issues – gearing up to William’s Earthshot prize announcement this weekend (October 17) – the Duke of Wales has said he “totally supports” the controversial climate action protestors from Insulate Britain.
