A woman has been dragged underneath a hovercraft ferry while reportedly trying to take a picture of it.

The woman was reportedly trying to take a photo of the hovercraft as it arrived in Clarence Pier, Portsmouth, from the Isle of Wight on Saturday, April 24.

Her body is said to have ejected out of the rear of the craft, as staff desperately tried to carry out an emergency shut down.

A major rescue operation is now said to be underway.

The woman, thought to have been unconscious, was dragged from the water and CPR was administered.

James Baggott, cockswain of Gosport and Fareham Independent lifeboat service, said: "We were tasked at 5.30pm to a person in the water near Portmouth Harbour.

"We launched within six minutes and we were on scene four minutes later. The causality was recovered from the water.

"One of my crew members is a Hampshire paramedic. He worked on the casualty with CPR with another of our crew members.

"He transferred that casualty into the hands of the ambulance service. The helicopter team, Portsmouth coastguard rescue, and Hampshire police all attended as well.

"The casualty's condition is unknown."

Daily Star has approached Hampshire Constabulary for comment.
