Horrified Facebook user Maighan Lawson posted an image of her shower to an Australian domestic tips page, showing what appeared to be “some sort of creature” living inside the spray nozzle.

The image showed a dozen or so ‘spider legs’ sticking out of the holes in her shower head, as if something was trapped inside.

Bearing in mind that Maighan lives in Australia, home to some of the most menacing creepy crawlies on Earth, it was perfectly reasonable for her to check.

Kate Rhianna Thomas responded quickly, commenting: “I just remember seeing this as a kid and being absolutely mortified thinking there were little creatures with tiny little legs sticking out of our shower head,” and she wasn’t the only one.

Gem Johnson added: “I thought it was spider legs and irrationally thought a whole spider was going to pop out and crawl on me while showering”.

Others weighed in with suggestions such as “my initial thought when I saw this was cockroach legs sticking out”.

Some others had had the same experience. One said: “Had this happen when we moved into our new house that had been vacant for six months. My daughter started screaming bloody murder!”

“I was racing around the house in a massive panic thinking someone had lost a body part or worse! only to hear her yelling that we had worms coming out of our shower head. I thought someone died the way she carried on!”

But the good news is, if you see this in your home, you aren’t sharing a bathroom with a family of giant spiders or monster worms.

In fact, it’s a perfectly normal phenomenon most commonly caused when you’ve had some plumbing work done

Facebook group member Liz Mae, explained that the tiny fragments of debris are called “spindles,” and they’re often caused when taps have been reseated or pipework shaved to get a better seal.

“My partner is a plumber and knew straight away,” she added.
