The actor, 57, who starred in the original show from 1999 to 2004 and also in the subsequent two movies, came back to the programme last month as Miranda Hobbes’ husband, who viewers learn now uses hearing aids.
Discussing Steve and David’s hearing, writer Elisa Zuritsky told Vanity Fair: ‘When [showrunner] Michael Patrick reconnected with David about the show, the very first thing that David said was, ”I got hearing aids.” It was literally what he led with.’

Elisa explained that after that conversation, the creators and writers decided to incorporate his hearing loss into the show as a storyline.
The first episode sees Steve strategising about using his hearing aid by taking it out when he does not want to hear his surroundings – such as his son Brady having sex.
Steve’s appearance on the show has been somewhat minimal as his wife Miranda, played by Cynthia Nixon, has been battling alcohol problems and has also been cheating on him with non-binary comedian Ché.
Amid concerns over his future on the show, Elisa assured viewers ‘we love Steve: ‘Everyone on the show, every single person, loves David Eigenberg as a human being. We love him as an actor…

‘We love Steve. We are really invested in the Steve-ness of him. He’s so full of life, and the Steves out there are good guys.’
Prior to the show’s comeback, David said of the prospect of a reboot: ‘I think it’s really interesting that they’ve brought it back.’
David had warm words for Sex And The City, saying: ‘I really love that show,’ and sharing that Cynthia was ‘a dream to work with.’

He revealed that he did have one reservation about participating in the revival – Anne Meara who played his character’s mother died in 2015.
He said: ‘That’s kind of heartbreaking because she was a dear lady and a dear friend of mine. It’s a sad thing to go back because that character, you know, [the] lineage is gone, and Anne as a human being wouldn’t be there….
‘It’s a strange thing, but we’ll see. … If it can work out, we may be going down that road’.
