‘With a loss like that, the world gets rearranged’: Andrew Garfield says the death of his mother left him with a ‘precise agony’ that saw him unable to do ‘anything’ for a period of time
Andrew Garfield has revealed the death of his mother left him with a ‘precise agony’ and told how he was unable to do ‘anything’ for a period of time.
The 38-year-old actor’s mother Lynn died from pancreatic cancer in 2019, shortly before he began filming for his Oscar-nominated role in Tick, Tick… Boom!
And detailing the impact of his loss to Channel 4 News’ Jackie Long, Andrew heartbreakingly said that it left him feeling lost and confused, adding: ‘with a loss like that, the world gets rearranged.’
Devastating: Andrew Garfield has revealed the death of his mother left him with a ‘precise agony’ and told how he was unable to do ‘anything’ for a period of time
He explained: ‘It is very very difficult, I think with a loss like that the world gets rearranged and I say that knowing I am not unique in that experience.
‘Its so strange because it feels very unique when it is happening, if feels like oh my god I’m the only person that’s ever lost their mother, because it does feel so lonely and precise.
‘It feels just like a precise agony and for a period of time I didn’t want to, and I wasn’t able to, do anything.
‘I was kind of wasted and the world didn’t make sense, and it still doesn’t, because I miss her greatly, and I hope it never makes sense because I always want to miss her.’

Andrew has been winning rave reviews and awards for his portrayal in Tick, Tick… Boom! of Rent lyricist and composer Jonathan Larson, who suddenly died on the morning of Rent’s first preview performance.
And though the film star, who is also know for his role as Spiderman, says his mother was ‘proud’ of his film careers, she was more elated as the way he’d treat people in everyday life.
He said on the programme: ‘She was proud of my achievements but she was much more proud of how I treated someone in Sainsbury’s or Asda that was checking us out with our groceries, she was someone that was about the small kindnesses in life.’
Tragic: detailing the impact of his loss to Channel 4 News’ Jackie Long, Andrew heartbreakingly said that it left him feeling lost and confused, adding: ‘with a loss like that, the world gets rearranged’
Stating how his mother’s influence is always with him, he continued: ‘If I’m short-tempered with someone, if I’m having a rough day and someone walks past me and they’re nice to me and I’m gruff, I will feel a little hand on my shoulder, it will be my mother’s hand and I hear her say ‘Andrew’ and I’ll go back and I’ll say ‘hey sorry that was a bit rude of me’.
‘I hope she never takes a hand off my shoulder in that way.’
It comes as Netflix viewers have been blown away by Andrew’s ‘spectacular’ portrayal of composer Jonathan Larson in the new musical film.
Starring Andrew and Vanessa Hudgens, the movie is a semi-autobiographical tale of composer/playwright Jonathan’s early days as he grapples with turning 30 and the harsh reality of life as a struggling artist.

He spent years working in a diner in New York and living in a tiny apartment, which didn’t even have heating, as he tried to make it as a composer and playwright.
Larson tragically died, age 35, from an aortic dissection in 1996 the night before the off-Broadway premiere of his musical RENT.
The screening comes as the fan favourite tick, tick…BOOM! failed to make the list for the BAFTAs.
The musical didn’t make it into a single category, despite it earning Andrew a Golden Globe win and SAG nomination for Best Actor.
However, it is up for Best Actor and Best Film Editing at the 94th Academy Awards.
Role: Andrew stars as the late Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s critically-acclaimed biopic, which started streaming November 19 on Netflix
