BAFTA TV Awards 2021 ‘They were snubbed!’: The Crown fans left shocked as acclaimed show fails to pick up ANY gongs despite dominating awards season
The Crown viewers were left shocked as the acclaimed show failed to pick up any gongs at the BAFTA TV Awards 2021 on Sunday night.
The Netflix drama, loosely based on the Royal Family, was nominated for a variety of gongs including Drama Series, Leading Actor (for Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles), Supporting Actor (for Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip) and Supporting Actress (for Helen Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret).
However, the series failed to hit a home run as they lost all four awards to other major TV contenders at the annual awards ceremony in London.

Expressing their shock on social media, one fan of The Crown penned: ‘Is it just me or is The Crown getting big snubbed at BAFTA TV awards?’
Another quipped: ‘Ikr. And how the Crown lost best drama? I thought it’s locked. Anyway BAFTA being BAFTA.’
A third viewer commented: ‘Netflix’s the crown’s misfortune era only in bafta yes ok bye’.
A fourth wrote on Twitter: ‘And after 4 seasons, Vanessa Kirby remains as the only actress who has won a BAFTA for The Crown, playing a better version of Princess Margaret than the real one.’

Save Me Too won the Drama Series award, Paul Mescal of Normal People beat Josh to the Leading Actor gong, Malachi Kirby (Small Axe) won Best Supporting Actor while Rakie Ayola of Anthony trumped Helena to claim the Best Supporting Actress award.

Despite failing to take home any trophies during Sunday’s star-studded ceremony, The Crown has won a plethora of awards in recent years at the American Film Institute Awards, the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Emma Corrin, who won the Drama Series Actress statue at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards in March, was ‘snubbed’ at this year’s BAFTA ceremony, after she was left off the 2021 nominations list.
Some took to Twitter to declare her absence from the nominations as a ‘literal joke’, despite her respective award season success as the late Princess Diana.
Expressing their frustration on social media, ‘baffled’ fans wrote: ‘Emma and gillian [Anderson] not being nominated for any baftas after already sweeping award season so far its very odd #BAFTATV.’

Angered viewers didn’t hold back as they continued: ‘baftas u absolute embarrassments how r u gonna nominate josh but not emma THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOMINATING AWARD SEASONS TOGETHER WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.’
Season four of the Netflix programme is based on the former Princess of Wales’ strained relationship with her husband Charles, as well as Margaret Thatcher’s reign as Prime Minister of the UK from the late 70s to the early 90s.

Elsewhere, the Leading Actor award was won by first-time nominee Paul Mescal for his performance as Connor in Normal People.
Malachi Kirby, another first-time winner, won for his performance in Small Axe in the Supporting Actor category. Small Axe had led this year’s nominations with 15 nods.
And Small Axe – which features five films that tell stories about lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s – also picked up two Leading Actor nominations with John Boyega and Shaun Parkes both receiving nods.
Rakie Ayola also won her first BAFTA for Supporting Actress for her performance in Anthony.

Another first-time nominee, Aimee Lou Wood scooped a gong in Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for playing Aimee Gibbs in Sex Education.
Male Performance in a Comedy Programme was awarded to Charlie Cooper for his performance in This Country.
Comedian Romesh Ranganathan received the BAFTA for Entertainment Performance for The Ranganation.
Save Me Too received the BAFTA for Drama Series and Sitting in Limbo won for Single Drama.

The Big Narstie Show won Comedy Entertainment Programme, its first win following its previous nomination in 2019. And the BAFTA for Entertainment Programme was awarded to Life & Rhymes while Scripted Comedy was awarded to Inside No 9.
The School That Tried to End Racism received the BAFTA for Reality & Constructed Factual. Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace won in the Features category. They Saw the Sun First won the BAFTA for Short Form Programme.
Casualty was awarded the BAFTA for Soap & Continuing Drama, its first since 2018. The Great House Giveaway won the BAFTA in the new Daytime category.
News Coverage was awarded to Sky News’ Inside Idlib, and the award for Current Affairs was presented to America’s War on Abortion (Exposure). International was awarded to Welcome to Chechnya: The Gay Purge (Storyville).

Once Upon a Time in Iraq received the BAFTA for Factual Series, Locked In: Breaking the Silence (Storyville) won Single Documentary and The Surgeon’s Cut won Specialist Factual.
England V West Indies Test Cricket triumphed in the Sport category, while the award for Live Event was presented to Springwatch 2020.
And Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment, the only award voted for by the public, was scooped by Britain’s Got Talent for the moment when Diversity performed a routine inspired by the events of 2020.
The category also saw nods to Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) being revealed as Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton and when Luke Skywalker appeared in the climax of The Mandalorian’s second season.
