Deborah James, 40, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in December 2016, and has documented each step of her “rollercoaster” journey. The BBC podcast presenter took to Instagram today to share a picture of herself topless and covered in tubes to show the realities of her experience.

Deborah shared a picture of herself sitting on a hospital bed in her underwear, with tubes attached to her.

In view of her 294,000 followers, the BBC podcast host penned: “Argh the cancer rollercoaster! Yesterday was the classic ride high and fall flat at the last bend! (sic)

“Started with positive blood results, drained all out (unlike in this picture) and I was more fussed about my makeup stash in hospital than anything else!

“Dry shampoo and Lippy for the win! Was feeling good (it’s all relative!) and my liver numbers were FINALLY improving (go liver!!). My oncologist even talked about getting me home in a few days.”

However, Deborah said this all changed when the “afternoon came” around.

She continued: “A small bleed meant I ended up being rushed back into theatre having a colonoscopy and Endoscopy within the hour to check for the source.

“It’s amazing how quickly crash teams work, and As much as I just want to be home (it’s now getting on to two weeks in hospital), it’s also nice to feel in a safe place when my body isn’t playing ball.

“Had an awful night of new regimes and being poked 10 times to find whatever working vein I have left (yes I have a port, but when you are on as much drugs as I am I need more lines in).

“Praying today will be un-eventual and stable! Thank you for your love.”

Deborah then finished the post to tell her followers that it will be either her, or her mother who will post further updates.

Many took to the comments to wish Deborah well and commemorate her bravery.

Doesmybumlook40 said: “Debs you never ever cease to amazing me or be simply utterly awe inspiring.

“You keep going, I’ll keep saying those prayers x.”

Presenter Kate Thornton added: “Oh Deb, I hope today is calmer and kinder. Thinking of you and your family x.”

Drnighatarif commented: “Sending you so much love and support. Thank you so much for your insightful and candid posts.

“This helps me as a clinician to learn and no doubt help others with their cancer journey. Keep on carrying on.”

The former deputy head teacher turned cancer campaigner has been living with stage four bowel cancer since she was diagnosed in December 2016, and was told early on that she might not live beyond five years.

Deborah has been in and out of the hospital for months, having undergone another procedure just before Christmas to remove a bile duct stent.

It was the same month the F*** You Cancer author celebrated her five-year milestone since her diagnosis, where she was told she might not make it beyond five years.

The surgery was performed after doctors uncovered that Deborah had developed an “aggressive” tumour next to her liver over the summer.
