Bradley Cooper says filming full-frontal nude scenes in Nightmare Alley was ‘pretty heavy.’
The 47-year-old actor stars in Guillermo del Toro’s as an ambitious carnival worker and explained how he had to get his kit off on camera in an intimate scene with Toni Collette’s character in a bathtub.
‘I remember reading in the script and thinking, he’s a pickled punk in that bathtub and it’s to story. You have to do it,’ Bradley told The Business.
Naked ambition: Bradley Cooper says filming full-frontal nude scenes in Nightmare Alley was ‘pretty heavy’
The setting: The 47-year-old actor stars in Guillermo del Toro’s as an ambitious carnival worker and explained how he had to get his kit off on camera in an intimate scene with Toni Collette’s character in a bathtub
‘I can still remember that day just to be naked in front of the crew for six hours, and it was Toni Collette’s first day. It was just like, “Whoa.” It was pretty heavy,’ he said.
Bradley had no qualms about appearing in the nude during the making of the movie as he felt it was ‘demanded’ to make the project a success.
The A Star Is Born actor said: ‘The content of what the movie is, what we were exploring, in order to do it in a real way, it demanded that we’d be naked emotionally and soulfully.’
He did it for his craft: ‘I remember reading in the script and thinking, he’s a pickled punk in that bathtub and it’s to story. You have to do it,’ Bradley told The Business. Seen in December
Bradley also explained the process of delving deep to give the best possible performance in the flick.
He said: ‘It really is akin to putting on a miner’s kit, hat and flashlight, and looking at each other and then going down in the tunnel, knowing that you may be excavating a route that won’t ever get you to the end that day but you come back up and go down again the next day.’
The Hangover star previously explained that it was a ‘unique experience’ making the film amid the coronavirus crisis.
Bradley said last year: ‘We have been making Nightmare Alley for the last two and a half years.

‘It was a unique experience, going through the pandemic, taking six months off and revisiting it. We not only became lifelong friends, but it was an artistic experience.’

The film boasts an all-star cast featuring the likes of Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett and Willem Dafoe.

Bradley said, ‘I was just so excited everyday coming to work, whether it was gonna be Willem Dafoe that day or David Strathairn or Mark Povinelli or Ron Perlman or Toni Collette, I mean, the cast was insane.
‘And then, being there with Guillermo. I think that was the most enjoyable thing… This was one of those movies where every single person showed up for the love of the game.’
And he pointed to the impact of director del Toro, and the emphasis he puts on telling ‘the best story possible’.
A triumph: ‘I have been so lucky to work with great artists,’ said the star as he is pictured in the movie doing his mind reading act
He explained: ‘I have been so lucky to work with great artists, and the thing that they all have in common is a level of humility and childlike curiosity, and he has both of those things.
‘And the only goal is to tell the best story possible, and once that happens, once you’re in that environment, it’s infectious.
‘And that’s what he does. And I think that’s why he’s able to bring the best out of most people he works with.’
This comes after Cooper said he found it ‘special’ to have ex Irina Shayk by his side at the Nightmare Alley premiere.
The shoot was on and off: ‘It was a unique experience, going through the pandemic, taking six months off and revisiting it. We not only became lifelong friends, but it was an artistic experience,’ said Bradley
The 46-year-old actor dated the 35-year-old supermodel – with whom he has four-year-old daughter Lea – for four years before their split in 2019, but they have remained close and co-parent their girl.
Irina was there to support him at the launch of his new crime thriller, and Bradley told Entertainment Tonight: ‘It’s very special.’
Last month, an insider noted the couple were finding their ‘groove’ with co-parenting.
The source said: ‘Irina and Bradley have been in a really great groove in regards to co-parenting for a while,’ the source said. ‘They both love Lea so much and want to be the best parents possible. A lot of Irina and Bradley’s interactions and hangouts surround Lea and her schedule, but they also get together on their own.’
