Britney Spears' dad would 'love' to see her not need a conservatorship

Britney Spears’ father ‘would love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship’… but the decision is completely out of his hands according to his lawyer

  • Mr. Spears’ lawyer Vivian Lee Thoreen said he is supportive of his daughter moving beyond the conservatorship but says it is up to her to ‘petition to end it’
  • Ms. Thoreen added ‘Jamie is not suggesting that he is the perfect dad’
  • The singer was put under conservatorship eight-years-ago after suffering a series of mental crises
  • Mr. Spears is currently serving as co-conservator over his daughter’s personal affairs and $60million estate with Bessemer Trust
  • The pair have reportedly not been in contact since last summer
  • ‘Jamie is respectful of Britney’s space, and he is also respectful of her attorney’s request that he not contact her,’ Ms. Thoreen said
  • Last month images of the family together at the start of the pandemic emerged
  • The video shows Spears with her mother, father, sister Jamie-Lynn and nieces at the family home in Louisiana

Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears is addressing some of the controversy over his daughter’s conservatorship after the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears put her legal situation in the spotlight, admitting he’d ‘love’ to see Spears free from the arrangement.

Spears’ attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen spoke on behalf of Mr. Spears, 68, in a statement to CNN, saying he would ‘love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship’ but that is is up to his daughter, 39, to make that happen.

‘Whether or not there is an end to the conservatorship really depends on Britney. If she wants to end her conservatorship, she can file a petition to end it,’ Thoreen said.

On her side: Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears says he’d ‘love’ to see his daughter’s conservatorship lifted by that Britney herself would need to file a petition to end the legal arrangement

The singer was put under conservatorship eight-years-ago after suffering a series of mental crises.

Mr. Spears’ lawyer acknowledged the family’s issues, saying: ‘Jamie is not suggesting that he is the perfect dad or that he would receive any “Father of the Year” award.

‘Like any parent, he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye on what Britney may want,’ she continued.

‘But Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.’

Mr. Spears is currently serving as co-conservator over his daughter’s personal affairs and $60million estate with Bessemer Trust after the pop singer’s legal team filed to remove Britney’s father as conservator last August.

According to Ms. Thoreen, Jamie ‘never contested or objected to Bessemer being appointed as his co-conservator.’

‘At the last hearing, it was reported that Jamie was trying to get more power than his co-conservator, and that is completely inaccurate,’ she explained.

‘What we were arguing is that Jamie and his co-conservator should have equal power, that was always consistent.’

Her call: ‘Whether or not there is an end to the conservatorship really depends on Britney. If she wants to end her conservatorship, she can file a petition to end it,’ Mr. Spears’ lawyer Vivian Lee Thoreen said. Spears is seen in 2019 above

Not perfect: Ms. Thoreen acknowledged the family’s issues, saying: ‘Jamie is not suggesting that he is the perfect dad or that he would receive any “Father of the Year” award. He’s seen in archival footage from the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears with ex-wife Lynne above

Family: Mr. Spears’ lawyer shared video of the pop star spending time with her family at the start of the pandemic with the media late last month

Ms. Spears’ attorney Samuel D. Ingham III declined to speak with CNN, telling the outlet he ‘can’t comment on a pending case.’

But during a November 2020 hearing, Ingham told the judge Ms. Spears was ‘afraid’ of her father and that she will not perform while he is in charge of her affairs.

Ultimately, Mr. Spears’ lawyer says that he has no say in whether or not his daughter stays in a conservatorship, no matter who is overseeing the arrangement.

‘The court investigator also interviews everyone who is involved in the conservatorship, and they do a deep dive to really study the conservatorship to find out what’s going on,’ Ms. Thoreen said.

‘And what I can tell you is every year the court has kept the conservatorship in place.’

CNN confirmed such a review process was in place with Los Angeles Superior Court, who were unable to comment on Spears specifically.

In December Mr. Spears told CNN he hadn’t spoken to his daughter since before the August court filings.

He did, however, spend time with her at the beginning of the pandemic the family home in Louisiana, according to Ms. Thoreen.

Things seemed fine between the family, as video obtained by CNN shows the chart-topper riding bikes and having fun with her father, mother Lynne Spears, sister Jamie Lynn Spears, and her nieces.

‘When the pandemic hit and everyone had to stay at home, Britney wanted to go home. She wanted to see her family,’ Thoreen explained.

Though it’s been sometime since their last contact, his lawyer said: ‘Jamie unquestionably loves Britney, and he misses her very much.

‘But he also respects her, and he wants to give her autonomy and space,’ she went on. ‘And as I’ve said before, like any other family, there are ups and downs.’

‘So, Jamie is respectful of Britney’s space, and he is also respectful of her attorney’s request that he not contact her. But the key is Britney knows that she can contact her daddy anytime and that he will be there for her. Whether or not there’s a conservatorship, Jamie will love Britney.’

The next court hearing in the conservatorship is scheduled for March 17.

Happy day: Britney took to Instagram Monday posting a shot alongside her teen sons Sean Preston, 15, and Jayden James, 14, as she mused about parenthood

Just yesterday Britney reflected on her own time as a parent, posing with sons Sean Preston, 15, and Jayden James, 14.

‘It’s so crazy how time flies,’ she said as the three were posed in a sunny canyon area, which she photoshopped an alternative version of, with massive clouds.

‘My boys are so big now!!!! I know … I know … it’s very hard for any mama especially a mama with boys seeing them grow up so fast!!!!’ she said.

‘Talk about enough to make you go to your knees … GEEZ!!!! I’m extremely lucky because my two babies are such gentleman and so kind that I must have done something right!!!!’

The Grammy-winning recording artist said she hasn’t ‘posted pictures of them for some time cause they’re at the age where they want to express their own identities’ which she said she ‘totally’ understands.

‘But I went out of my way to make this cool edit and guess what …. They’re finally letting me post it!!!’ she wrote. ‘Now I don’t feel left out anymore and I’m gonna go celebrate …. Oh s*** I guess cool moms don’t do that … Ok I’ll just read a book instead!!!!’

Spears in September 2019 was granted 30 percent unsupervised custodial rights for her sons in court, in the wake of an August 2019 incident between Sean Preston and Britney’s father Jamie, 68.
