Brooke Shields BIGGEST BOMBSHELLS laid bare

Brooke Shields’ biggest BOMBSHELLS laid bare: From playing a sexualized 12-year-old girl raised in a brothel to A-list rocky romances – the most shocking moments from Pretty Baby revealed

By the time she was a teenager, showbiz icon Brooke Shields was already a household name as the controversial face of Calvin Klein jeans along with leading roles in hit films.

But, despite growing up in front of the camera, little did the world actually know of the many ordeals Brooke had been forced to overcome during her career.

In her new documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, the Hollywood legend, 57, lays bare shocking moments she endured during her road to stardom which caused her daughter to ‘sob’ after watching the film.

From playing a sexualized 12-year-old girl raised in a brothel to being raped at age 22, here DailyMail.com takes a look back at all the shocking bombshells Shields revealed in her recently released Hulu documentary.

PLAYING A SEX WORKER AT AGE 11 IN PRETTY BABY

In the documentary, Brooke said she was sexualized from a young age and slammed her mother, Teri, for allowing her to be put in so many inappropriate situations throughout her childhood.

She famously played a sex worker raised in a brothel in the 1978 movie Pretty Baby when she was just 11, and she had to kiss her costar, Keith Carradine, then 27, for one scene of the flick.

In the doc, her daughters revealed they had refused to watch it, with Rowan branding it as ‘child pornography.’

While chatting with The Sunday Times about it, the star said it was ‘hard for her’ to have the conversation about the movie with her daughters, and that she had to remind herself ‘not to justify her mother to them.’

‘I mean, I could say, “Oh, it was the time back then,” or, “Oh, it was art,” but I don’t know why she thought it was all right. I don’t know,’ she added.

‘I had to contend with so much at such an early age, and there was resilience, but also I put on blinders as a defense mechanism. But now I can look at that little girl and think, “She did it, she pulled through.”‘

SLAMMING ENDLESS LOVE DIRECTOR

Shields recalled with disgust how the director of Endless Love twisted her toe during a sex scene to try to get her to make an ‘ecstasy face’ when she was just 15 years old.

On the set of Endless Love, Shields said director Franco Zeffirelli was equally exploitive of her sexuality.

‘The physicality and the exploration of sexuality felt really dangerous to me,’ she said. ‘I didn’t trust the director to create a safe environment for me.’

She said that culminated in the shooting of the scene where her character loses her virginity – a sex scene she was already uncomfortable about shooting – when Zeffirelli violently twisted her toe to force her to make a face that looked like ‘I had a feeling of, sort of, I guess, ecstasy.’

‘His thing was “the look on your face it has to be ecstasy”,’ she said. ‘But it was more angst than anything, because he was hurting me.

‘I thought as myself as just the sort of the workhorse. It was transactional,’ she said.

‘I didn’t want to appear stupid or untalented, so I just disassociated, she recalled. ‘You instantly become a vapor of yourself around something that’s happening to you.’

Shields said she ‘shut down’ on set for the rest of production after that incident.

DISGUST AT BLUE LAGOON DIRECTOR

Though just 14 years old during the shooting of The Blue Lagoon, Shields was no stranger to being sexualized after having played a prostitute in the 1978 movie Pretty Baby at just 11 years old.

Before that, she had also been photographed nude in a Playboy publication at just 10 years old.

By the time she reached the Blue Lagoon set – a film famous for its pervasive nudity – Shields recalled how director Randal Kleiser was determined to exploit that sexualized image by making it appear she as person was experiencing a sexual awakening at the same time as the character she portrayed.

The documentary quoted Kleiser as telling a newspaper ‘It’s real, she’s going from a child to a woman during the filming.’

Shields expressed her disgust with Kleiser’s intentions.

‘They wanted to make it reality show,’ she said. ‘They wanted to sell my actual sexual awakening.’

LONELINESS AT PRINCETON COLLEGE

Shields took a hiatus from Hollywood to attend the Ivy League university, and initially struggled with loneliness as her peers attempted to avoid her.

‘It was so lonely, it was so lonely. And people tried to be so nice, just tried to give me my space,’ Brooke revealed.

‘And I was like, “I don’t want space, I want to go home or I want friends. Please don’t respect me, please don’t respect my space.”

‘So I went from people charging at me, to people completely avoiding me, and then I’d just miss my mommy. We’d talked about it in interviews, that umbilical cord had never been cut.’

Brooke described how she had a preconceived notion of what college would be like.

College loneliness: One of friends said people were ‘diligently avoiding her’ and she even called her mom saying she wanted to go home

‘You saw it in movies, you had the ivy and old buildings and the arches. I wanted that experience,’ she said.

‘Education was sort of the one thing my dad could feel good about.’

Friend Isobel Colman said many of the students would be ‘diligently avoiding’ Brooke.

‘Princeton attracts a certain type and everybody thinks highly of themself and they’re like: “Well I’m not going to be sucked into that circus,”‘ Isobel said.

Brooke also explained that it was unusual for a female Hollywood star to go to college back in the 1980s, with cultural psychologist Jeffrey Alexander saying: ‘At the time, of course, she really was breaking the glass because a sex symbol doesn’t go to Princeton.’

She recalled calling her mom, Teri, and telling her that she wanted to come home.

But Teri remained firmed and told her: ‘Honey, you’ll never forgive yourself. You will be so mad at yourself if you don’t follow through on this.’

Eventually Brooke did find her feet, joining the Princeton Triangle Club, described as ‘the nation’s oldest touring collegiate musical comedy troupe.’

‘I found all the really creative guys and girls, we just wanted to do comedy and musicals, and it was fun,’ she added.

At Princeton, Brooke also started to find her own voice and autonomy, and the more push back she got, the more resistant she became.

‘The more public scrutiny and criticism I experienced, the more I thought: “Hell no, you’re not taking this away from me,”‘ she said.

‘It kind of morphed into this big rebellion.’

LOSING HER VIRGINTY TO DEAN CAIN

While attending Princeton, she began dating fellow actor and student Dean Cain. She described losing her virginity to him in her documentary and how she ran ‘butt naked’ from the room after they slept together for the first time.

In the documentary, the star said she felt ‘regret’ about how she first had sex with Dean, and that he was ‘more comfortable with the sexual part’ of their relationship than she was.

Brooke laughed as she recalled her first time sleeping with Dean when she was a junior in college.

‘When we finally had sex, I immediately ran out of the room, ran down the hall butt naked, just running. I didn’t know where I was going,’ she said.

‘He ran after me with the duvet and grabbed a hold of me and said, “Where are you going?” He said, “I’m not going anywhere, I’m not leaving you, you’re the same person.” He got it immediately and I just cried.

‘I wanted to jump into the personal relationship and the love and the commitment,’ she said in the documentary. ‘We had to teach each other about each other.’

OPENING UP ABOUT HER RAPE

In the documentary, the actress reveals she was raped at age 22 in a hotel room by an unnamed man in the film industry.

She had met him to discuss possible film projects following her graduation from the prestigious Princeton University in 1987.

After dinner, the man — whom she says was a friend — invited her to call a taxi from his hotel room, which he then left. Shields says her ‘friend’ later returned naked and suddenly attacked her.

‘He was right on me. It was just like wrestling,’ she adds.

Shields says she ‘froze’ and didn’t fight back for fear of being killed: ‘God knows I knew how to be disassociated from my body. I’d practiced that.’

She claims she left the hotel after the attack, got in a taxi and ‘cried all the way’ to the apartment of another friend.

She said it took her years to come to terms with what had happened.

BRIEF ROMANCE WITH JFK JR.

Shields has revealed that she refused to sleep with JFK Jr. on their first and only date despite admitting she was infatuated with him for years.

Although the bombshell insisted that Kennedy was ‘the best kiss’ she ever had, her years-long crush went sideways after he repeatedly told her she looked like his mother, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Revealing all on The Howard Stern Show, Shields said her one dalliance with the former president’s son came during their only meeting on a ski trip to Aspen, Colorado.

But she said his behavior was ‘less than chivalrous’, including failing to get her a cab home after she declined to bed him, then ignoring her when they met on the ski slopes the next day.

SEEKING HELP FOR POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Shields revealed she considered killing herself by driving into a wall after becoming a mother and suffering terrible postnatal depression.

The American model and actress, who married then divorced tennis player Andre Agassi, went on to tie the knot with television writer Chris Henchy, with whom she now has two daughters, Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16.

But Brooke, who starred in the films Pretty Baby and Blue Lagoon, said she was so depressed after giving birth to Rowan that her daughter felt like ‘a stranger’ to her for a long time.

Speaking on the WTF podcast with Marc Maron, Brooke said: ‘I was exhausted. I had gone through IVF seven times.

‘I lost so much blood when I gave birth to her and herniated my uterus. It was just everything that could have gone wrong. I thought I was going to die. They were going to give me a hysterectomy.’

‘There was so much trauma. And then I get home and I don’t know what to do with a baby.

Family life: In 2001, she married Chris Henchy, who is the father of her daughters Rowan and Grier

‘I’m depleted and I’m completely biochemically imbalanced, and no-one knows it, and they just say “stop breastfeeding or stop doing this”.’

She added: ‘I couldn’t understand my mind. It’s the worst. It’s taking everything that made me who I am and absolutely ripping my legs out from under me.

‘You just feel so helpless and scared. I called the doctor and it was like “oh, it’s the baby blues”.

‘The doctor called me back and he said “I apologise for violating the patient-doctor privilege. I talked to my wife, who is a doula (offering emotional support through pregnancy and after birth), about it, and she thinks that you are experiencing post-partum (post-natal) depression and would you take medication?”. Of course, I said no.

Eventually, she started taking the medication and began ‘feeling better’ and ‘wanting to be around’ her daughter.

Mother-daughter bond: Shields pictured with her daughters Rowan and Grier last year

Brooke said her husband filled the parenting void caused by her depression – but that got her down too.

She said: ‘Her father came in, and he just went into mode. He had never held a baby before and now he was doing it.

‘And they have a very strong relationship. I sort of beat myself up about that for a long time. I thought ‘you made them bond and you did this to yourself”.’

Brooke revealed she’d suffered from postnatal depression in 2005, saying: ‘I finally had a healthy beautiful baby girl and I couldn’t look at her.’

Some weeks later, her Endless Love co-star Tom Cruise — who, as a Scientologist, opposes psychiatry on the grounds it is abusive — attacked Brooke for using an antidepressant drug, Paxil, cattily asking: ‘Where has her career gone?’

She shot back, saying he should ‘stick to fighting aliens’ — a reference to the belief among Scientologists that space alien parasites live inside all of us and must be destroyed.

He later apologised in person to Brooke for the incident, which she called ‘heartfelt’ and she and her husband attended Tom’s wedding to Katie Holmes.

THE FRIENDS EPISODE THAT HUMILIUATED HER FIRST HUSBAND ANDRE AGASSI

Shields branded her ex-husband Andre Agassi ‘petulant’ after he smashed all his trophies having watched her film her Friends cameo.

The actress starred as Joey Tribbiani’s (Matt LeBlanc) stalker Erika in the 1996 episode The One After the Superbowl.

Erika believes Joey is actually his Days of Our Lives character Dr. Drake Ramoray and goes on a date with him only to end up cackling manically before licking his hand at the restaurant table.

But Brooke’s tennis player ex-husband Andre, who she was married to from 1997 to 1999, was left seething after watching the pair’s performance, believing he had been left humiliated, according to the star.

First marriage: Shields was married to Andre Agassi from 1997 to 1999

She told The New Yorker: ‘In the scene, I’m supposed to lick Joey’s fingers, because they’re the hands of a genius, and I want to devour them, and I’m a nut.

‘He was cute — he was, like, “I’ve washed my hands and they’re all clean.” I was, like, “I had a mint!”‘

She went on to explain that her former partner Andre was less than impressed, adding: ‘Andre was in the audience supporting me, and he stormed out.

‘He said, “Everybody’s making fun of me. You made a fool of me by that behaviour.” I’m, like, “It’s comedy! What is the matter with you?”‘

Brooke later learned Andre was using drug crystal meth at the time, reasoning: ‘So that irrational behaviour I’m sure had something to do with that,’ adding that he went home and smashed up all his trophies over the incident.
