Meanwhile Carrie Underwood pulled out all the stops when she soared above the audience at the ceremony as she led the performances of the night.

The 39-year-old country music icon had all eyes on her as she levitated above the stage with a troupe of dancers to pull off a delicate aerial dance to her single Ghost Story, from her upcoming album Denim & Rhinestones.

Flying high: Carrie Underwood pulled out all the stops on Monday when she soared above the audience at the 2022 CMT Music Awards ceremony in Nashville. The 39-year-old country music icon had all eyes on her as she levitated above the stage with a troupe of dancers to pull off a delicate aerial dance to her single Ghost Story

Center stage: As massive doors on stage opened to reveal the stage setup, the former American Idol star was seen standing atop a raised platform

Colorful: She was dressed in a sheer lavender bodysuit that left one toned leg exposed, while featuring a voluminous train trailing behind her

Up and away: Halfway through the songs, aerial dancers suspended from white ropes descended from the rafters, showing off their graceful moves while Carrie continued to sing. As Ghost Story reached its powerful climax, another white rope dropped down to the stage behind her, which Carrie tucked under her arms

Powerful pipes: She continued singing just as strongly, even as she twisted her legs in the ropes and was pulled high above the stage, though it wasn’t clear if she was singing live or was merely lip syncing to a pre-recorded track

Low key: Keith Urban kicked off the CMT Awards on a high note with his 2021 single Wild Hearts. The country rockers was dressed in a casual black T-shirt and dark ripped jeans

Guitar hero: He strutted down a platform into the middle of the audience halfway through the song to rip a guitar solo in front of adoring fans. He was rocking out on a classic gold top Gibson Les Paul guitar, with some chips in the varnish

Marquee: Behind him, the song’s title was spelled out in neon letters, along with illustrations of Johnny Cash, who was referenced in the lyrics

She led a bevy of catchy performances from other country stars, including Keith Urban, Carly Pearce, Maren Morris, Little Big Town and more.

Carrie lit up the CMT’s first hour with her purple-bathed performance, which was introduce by co-host Kelsea Ballerini from her home, as she had to present remotely after testing positive for Covid-19.

As massive doors on stage opened to reveal the stage setup, the former American Idol star was seen standing atop a raised platform.

Woman in white: Carly Pearce capped off the first half-hour of the CMT Awards with her song Diamondback, which is the lead track on her 2021 album 29: Written In Stone and was co-written by Kelsea Ballerini

No flash: The singer–songwriter skipped the theatrics and let the tune’s chugging rhythm get feet tapping and heads bobbing

Woman in white: Carly showcased her legs with her white mini dress, which was serpentine gold designs and featured long gold fringe on the sleeves. She wore her blond locks parted down the middle, with her thick curls cascading down her shoulders

It takes two: Maren Morris got some help on stage by her husband Ryan Hurd, as they performed a duet of her song I Can’t Love You Anymore, which was released on her album Humble Quest in March

Stunning: The songstress put on a busty display in a plunging sheer brown dress with a glittering butterfly over her midriff. She added a stylish 1970s feel with her long blond hair and her parted bangs

Complementary: Ryan looked rugged in a denim shirt and paint-splattered gray jeans as she strummed an acoustic guitar

Too cute: As the song concluded, the lovebirds held hands and gazed sweetly into each other’s eyes

She was dressed in a sheer lavender bodysuit that left one toned leg exposed, while featuring a voluminous train trailing behind her.

The suit also had only one sleeve, and it featured frilly embellishments on Carrie’s collar.

Halfway through the songs, aerial dancers suspended from white ropes descended from the rafters, showing off their graceful moves while Carrie continued to sing.

As Ghost Story reached its powerful climax, another white rope dropped down to the stage behind her, which Carrie tucked under her arms.

All together: Jimmie Allen also got some help with his song Pray. The country singer was joined by the R&B singer Monica, along with Little Big Town. He opened the performance on an upright piano while dressed in an over-the-top white lizard-print suit and matching cowboy hat

Change of pace: The song took off when Monica took over on vocals. She wore a white sweater top with an intriguing harness and billowing slacks, along with a white blazer with feathered sleeves that was draped over her shoulders

Angelic chorus: They were joined by Little Big Town, whose members served as a chorus while Jimmie and Monica sang lead. Kimberly Schlapman wore a frilly plunging white dress, while Karen Fairchild was covered in long white fringe. Jimi Westbrook had on a white suit, but Philip Sweet was more low key with a white denim jacket

Harmonies: Little Big Town also got a chance to shine when they went solo with their new single Hell Yeah. Philip Sweet (R), who wore a black jacket and strummed an acoustic guitar, handled lead vocal duties, while the other three singers provided backing

Leading ladies: Kimberly Schlapman showed off her voluminous blond curls while wearing a glittering silver sequined mini dress highlighting her legs. Karen Fairchild glowed nearly as much in a studded bodysuit, which she covered up with a black blazer

Doing it her way: Miranda Lambert, who won Female Video of the Year at the ceremony, gave a triumphant performance of her single If I Was A Cowboy

Woman in black: The songstress looked as if she was inspired by Elvis Presley black comeback special suit as she wore her own version, which was embroidered with Southwest imagery, including cacti and desert landscapes

Seeing green: She added some color to the playful ensemble with long green fringe on her sleeves, and she covered up her blond locks with a pale pink–and–white tie-dye cowboy hat

Jeweled: The country star added some extra color to her look with a turquoise necklace

Duet: Following Keith Urban’s high-energy opener, Lainey Wilson and Cole Swindell kept things moving along with an outdoor performance

Dramatic weather: The two performed Never Say Never together as rain drops began to pour down on them and the crowd

What a difference: Lainey was dressed in shiny gold paints with a silver-studded top with black fringe, while Cole went low key in a gray jacket with jeans, a white T-shirt and a blue baseball cap

Odd couple: Later in the ceremony, Mickey Guyton took to the stage with the group Black Pumas, who play a psychedelic version of soul

Going blue: She stunned in the royal number

Man in black: Singer and guitarist Eric Burton dressed for the occasion in a black shirt accented with yellow fringe, along with matching black jeans and a wide-brimmed hat covering his braids

Pyrotechnics: The singers climaxed just as fireworks went off behind them, and they gave a quick high-five before taking a bow

She continued singing just as strongly, even as she twisted her legs in the ropes and was pulled high above the stage, though it wasn’t clear if she was singing live or was merely lip syncing to a pre-recorded track.

Keith Urban kicked off the CMT Awards on a high note with his 2021 single Wild Hearts.

The country rockers was dressed in a casual black T-shirt and dark ripped jeans as he shredded on his weathered gold top Gibson Les Paul guitar.

He strutted down a platform into the middle of the audience halfway through the song to rip a guitar solo in front of adoring fans.

Making the best of it: She wasn’t able to host in person after testing positive for Covid-19, but that didn’t stop Kelsea Ballerini from performing at the CMT Awards. The singer–songwriter sang at home in her backyard in front of a simple blue sheet, with yellow flowers arranged at her feet

Glowing: She looked lovely in a glittering seafoam mini dress that accented her toned legs and had triangular cutouts over her chest and hips, and she stood tall in a set of white platform heels

Blond beauty: The country star wore her long blond hair swept over one shoulder, and she had on eyeshadow that perfectly matched the shade of her dress. She debuted her new song Heartburst

Back in black: Gabby Barrett gave a more understated performance with her song Pick Me Up. She had all eyes on her in her black sequined suit, which had a cape trailing behind her

Moving on up: At the song’s climax, she stepped onto a platform in the middle of the audience that began to raise her up

Belting it out: Back on the outdoor stage, Cody Johnson gave a moving but reserved performance while playing guitar on his tune Til You Can’t

Family: Among the most anticipated performances was a reunion of The Judds, the duo of Naomi Judd and her daughter Wynonna Judd

Honor legends: The family duo were introduced by country-crossover star Kacey Musgraves, who glowed in a white dress with a lacy top decorated with beads

Opulent: Wynonna rocked a black sequined suit for their number, while Naomi looked glamorous in a royal blue suit with fabric draped from her sleeves

He’s back! Kenny Chesney capped off the CMT Awards with a rollicking performance of his 2005 song Beers In Mexico

Old school: The country hitmaker was dressed casually in a charcoal T-shirt with weathered jeans and dark brown boots, plus a straw cowboy hat. The popular singer was returning to the award show ahead of a massive stadium tour

Playing the clown: Thomas Rhett, who egged on the hosts from the audience, was joined by Riley Green on stage

Brief: Breland was among the performers doing shorter excerpts of songs on the Ram Truck side stage

Crowd pleaser: Walker Hayes had the crowd in his hand as her performed his hit AA

Behind him, the song’s title was spelled out in neon letters, along with illustrations of Johnny Cash, who was referenced in the lyrics.
