Coronation Street star Bill Roache admits he ‘fancied’ the Queen when they met

William "Bill" Roache admitted he "fancied" the Queen and grew fonder and fonder of the 95 year old monarch every time he met her.

The Coronation Street actor, who celebrates his 90th birthday this month and was named in the New Year's Honours list, has met Her Majesty an incredible eight times.

And from their very first meeting, the Ken Barlow icon was attracted to her.

Speaking in a TV documentary about his own wonderfully-accomplished life and decades in soap, Bill revealed he has remained incredibly fond of the Royal since their initial encounter when he was just 21.

“I’ve met the Queen eight times," the Weatherfield stalwart said during an interview in Happy Birthday Bill.

"I first met her when I was 21 and I was in the Army and we had the day with her which was very nice.

“I really fancied her! I don’t know if that’s heresy but she was very attractive," the star added.

The special show has been made in honour of the veteran actor as he gets ready to celebrate his big birthday.

With a colourful life and some amazing memories, filmmakers went down memory lane with the Coronation Street star as he reflected on his early schooldays in Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

Bill spent years travelling all around the world during his time in the British Army.

He first joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers back in 1953, and his first station was in Jamaica.

It was during this time that he encountered the Queen, as she was visiting the Commonwealth Caribbean country at on a Royal visit.

What's more, the actor was also shown a snap during the documentary from his army regiment's party when the Queen herself attended.

“This is the party with the Queen!" he said excitedly at the sight of the picture. "I remember being there because she was fascinated by the regimental goat.

"The goat ate cigarettes, two cigarettes a day, and she was feeding him," the star added with a laugh.
